What is a refinery helper?

Refinery Helpers are entry-level workers who assist in the day-to-day operations at oil refineries or chemical plants. Their duties typically include helping with equipment maintenance, cleaning work areas, handling tools and materials, and supporting skilled technicians and operators. Refinery Helpers play an important role in ensuring that the facility runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently. This position often serves as a starting point for those seeking a career in refinery operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by refinery helpers during their shifts?

Refinery Helpers often encounter challenges such as working in noisy or hot environments, adhering strictly to safety protocols, and handling physically demanding tasks like lifting heavy materials or equipment. They may also need to quickly adapt to changing priorities or assist with unexpected maintenance issues. Effective communication with team members and attention to detail are crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency on the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a refinery helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Refinery Helper, you need basic mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial safety procedures, hand and power tools, and sometimes OSHA or HAZMAT certifications are typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to follow instructions make someone stand out in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure safe, efficient refinery operations and to minimize risks in a hazardous environment.

Job description

ABOUT TRINDENT

Trindent Consulting is a global management consulting firm that specializes in technical augmentation in the energy sector, specifically downstream oil & gas and large energy users. We are a profit improvement firm, first and foremost.

We’ve helped over 100 clients achieve significant financial benefits that yield between 500–1500% return-on-investment within the 1st year – and we’ve done that without capital investments or software changes of any kind.

Established in 2008, Trindent Consulting has quickly garnered a reputation as a firm that Makes It Happen. We are ranked as one of Canada’s Fastest-Growing Companies by Canadian Business and GROWTH 500 for 7 years in a row and named one of the Fastest-Growing Consulting Firms by Consulting Magazine in 2015 through 2020.

Trindent Consulting specializes in process engineering & optimization. Without capital investment we create actionable ways to sustainably increase refinery margins by 2–3%.

Refineries are extraordinarily complex businesses. Trindent specializes in several ultra-high value niches within refineries where tens of millions of dollars in performance improvement may be captured in the short-term.

Underpinned by data analytics, industry know-how, and technical experience; Trindent has implemented improvement engagements in over 40 refineries globally.

BUSINESS EXPANSION

Our European practice is expanding. As part of this growth, we are building a strong pipeline of experienced refinery professionals to support client engagements across the European Union. While opportunities will depend on client demand, we are actively engaging with qualified engineers who can contribute within one of Trindent’s four core downstream services. We are gearing up for 20–25% growth and we hope you will join us on this journey!

This is a highly client-facing role based around project delivery in the EU. Consultants must be available to travel approximately 80% of the time, typically Monday to Friday, to client sites across EU member states.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Engagement Manager is responsible for ensuring the consistent application of project management discipline and practices from initiation through project completion and close-out. The Engagement Manager manages assigned Oil & Gas Refinery projects typically ranging from $750K-$3MM and is responsible for the successful delivery of all tactical and strategic aspects of a project. The Engagement Manager is also responsible for identifying, pursuing, and securing additional opportunities which enhance our customers’ experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and review project proposals and plans to determine timeframe, staffing requirements and resource allocation, project structure and implementation strategies and collaborate with Project Leadership to identify and mitigate project risks
  • Confer with project staff to outline work plans and to assign responsibilities and workstream scope and actively review status reports and modify schedules or plans as necessary
  • Deliver project status reports to management, clients and/or other necessary stakeholders
  • Establish and maintain effective client engagement with client project team
  • Effectively manage conflicts and ensure timely resolution of issues that could affect project success
  • Actively monitor the delivery of project milestones and sustainable results to ensure that results are delivered on-time, in full and within budget
  • Participate in delivery of training programs and act as a mentor and coach for Operations professionals by providing performance feedback and support of their development plans
  • Participate in or lead internal improvement initiatives as required and ensure team compliance to all internal policies and procedures
  • Perform other responsibilities as necessary
KEY SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • 5+ years of refinery operations management experience, with excellent technical skills.
  • 5+ years of downstream experience successfully managing workstreams within one or more of the four services: Blending, Energy Intensity, Hydrocarbon Loss Control, Value Chain Optimization.
  • 5+ years of experience with project management processes and methodologies.
  • Lean Six Sigma ‘Black Belt’ certified preferred.
  • Demonstrable experience in continuous process improvement.
  • Advanced proficiency in and knowledge of MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint (an Excel test is a standard part of our assessment process).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible and to successfully adapt to a variety of working environments, and be able to engage and motivate individuals within all levels of an organization.
QUALIFICATIONS

An MBA or equivalent postgraduate degree, or a bachelor’s degree (Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering) and relevant experience in Oil & Gas Refinery.

WORK LOCATION & FLEXIBILITY

Client-facing consulting role supporting engagements across the European Union.

Approximately 80% travel is required, typically Monday to Friday, according to project and client needs.

Candidates must be able to travel regularly and work onsite at refinery and client locations throughout the EU.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN

Work on complex, high-value refinery improvement projects within one or more of Trindent’s four core services.

Join a fast-growing, dynamic consulting environment with structured opportunities to build subject-matter expertise.

Gain exposure to diverse refinery clients, operating challenges and project teams across the European Union.

We measure our success by our clients’ results.
