The Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) Surveillanceย and Birth Defects Surveillanceย Programsย within the Family Health and Wellness Division at the Tennessee Department of Healthย areย seeking a Public Health Nurse Consultant 1. This is a fulltime hybrid position that includes remote work andย requiredย inย office days (1โ€“2 times per month) at the Central Office in Nashville, TN.ย Typical working hours Monday - Friday 8AM to 4:30PM CST, 37.5 hours per week. Travel to central office in Nashville, TN is not reimbursable.ย 

The Public Health Nursing Consultant 1 will serve as a subject matter expertย for both teams -ย Neonatal Abstinence Syndromeย and Birth Defects โ€“ andย will focusย mainly onย reviewing and abstracting medical records.ย 

Job duties will include:ย 

  • Maintain status of all infant medical record requests inย REDCapย 
  • Review assigned medical records (digital, electronic, and hard copies) and extract relevant information andย requiredย data variablesย 
  • Review and abstract assigned electronic medical recordsย 
  • Cross-reference information from multiple sources to ensure abstracted dataย isย complete andย accurateย 
  • Perform data entry into database for abstracted medical recordsย 
  • Review data entry by non-clinical staff to ensure clinical accuracyย 
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance at all timesย 
  • Submit service referrals toย appropriate socialย services, when indicatedย 
  • Work closely with the NASย and Birth Defectsย Surveillance Teamsย toย identifyย issues and ensure data processes are complete andย accurateย 
  • Maintain partnerships with medical records office staff and provide feedback as it relates to process improvementsย 
  • Work independently, responsibly, and efficiently; problem-solving and communicating when needs are presentย 
  • Complete abstraction assignments on time with minimal supervisionย 
  • Attend weekly meetings with theย NASย andย TNBDSS teamsย 
  • Maintain ongoing education on developments in patient care, data management, birth defects, healthy pregnancy, andย quality improvementย 
  • Work closely with program epidemiologists to ensure accuracy of data collectionย 
  • Partnering with other FHW programs within Children and Youth with Special Healthcare Needs (CYSHCN) on special projects and strategic planningย 

Qualifications/Requirementsย ย 

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN),ย Masterโ€™sย degreeย (MSN)ย preferred.ย ย 
  • Experience:ย ย 
  • Minimumย 1 year in Health Information Management; Coding, and/or Medical Record abstraction experienceย ย 
  • Clinical background inย High-Risk Obstetrics,ย Pediatrics, Labor/Delivery, Congenital Birth Defects,ย Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome,ย and/or Maternal/Child Healthย requiredย
