What is a Red Hat Solution Architect?

A Red Hat Solution Architect is an IT professional who designs, develops, and implements solutions using Red Hat technologies, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, OpenShift, and Ansible. They work closely with clients to understand their business needs and recommend the best open-source solutions to meet those requirements. Solution Architects also provide technical guidance, support pre-sales activities, and ensure that Red Hat products are integrated effectively into clients' existing IT environments.

How does a Red Hat Solution Architect typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during a project lifecycle?

A Red Hat Solution Architect plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between clients’ business needs and technical solutions. Throughout a project, they work closely with clients to understand requirements, then partner with internal engineering, sales, and support teams to design and implement tailored Red Hat solutions. Regular communication, workshops, and technical presentations are common, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned. This collaborative approach not only helps address technical challenges early but also ensures the solution scales and integrates smoothly within client environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Red Hat Solution Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Red Hat Solution Architect, you need deep expertise in Linux systems, cloud technologies, and enterprise architecture, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Hands-on experience with Red Hat products (such as RHEL, OpenShift, or Ansible) and certifications like Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and client-facing skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure you can design, implement, and support robust Red Hat solutions that align with client needs and business objectives.

  • Collaborate with Cloud, DevOps, and Application teams to integrate workloads across private and hybrid cloud infrastructures.

2. Cloud Operations Management

  • Perform log reviews across OpenStack services and identify recurring fault patterns.

Lifecycle Management
  • Plan and test RHOSP upgrades in lab/staging environments before production rollout.
  • Automate backup and recovery processes for OpenStack databases, configurations, and metadata.
  • Validate restore procedures and document disaster recovery verification steps.

Security & Compliance
  • Review STIG compliance guidance and validate current configurations against RHOSP 17.x standards.
  • Verify firewall, SELinux, and authentication policies on controller and compute nodes.
  • Conduct vulnerability scans using Red Hat Insights or OpenSCAP, tracking remediation and compliance.

Capacity & Performance
  • Add and validate compute nodes using Director (TripleO).
  • Support GPU node onboarding and verify Nova GPU scheduling.
  • Perform performance tuning for Nova, Neutron, and Cinder services.

Automation & Efficiency
  • Develop Ansible playbooks for provisioning, patching, and backups.
  • Maintain Git-based automation repositories for version control and change management.

Continuous Improvement
  • Identify knowledge or tooling gaps across RHOSP environments.
  • Propose and lead training or shadowing sessions for OpenStack and Ansible operations.
  • Provide monthly improvement reports on performance, automation, and reliability metrics.

Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of Linux system architecture and administration experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and RHOSP (preferably 17.1).
  • Proven experience architecting and operating private or hybrid OpenStack clouds.
  • Strong expertise in Ansible, Terraform, Git, and automation workflows.
  • Solid knowledge of Prometheus, Alert manager, Grafana, and STF.
