Job Summary and Qualifications

Under the direct supervision of the Phlebotomy/Lab Supervisor, he/she will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and perform various screening tests as indicated. He/she is responsible for the collection of venous and capillary blood samples using various techniques (i.e. syringe, heel stick, venipunctures, finger (stick). Receive, process and distribute laboratory specimens, distribute departmental paperwork, and stock supplies as needed. Employee will be responsible for the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, educational, safety and related criteria for the neonate, infant child, adolescent, adult and geriatric population as it affects Phlebotomy. He/she will be required to maintain a professional and cooperative working relationship with patients, patients’ families, medical staff, and other hospital personnel. He/she must at all times verify patient identification at bedside, giving instructions to patients when needed, taking safety precautions during the handling of specimens and blood collections. He/she must wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required. He/she will perform tasks as assigned by the Supervisor within their scope of training.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Work Experience:

Two to three years experience in a clinical/ phlebotomy setting preferred.

Skills:

Proficient in phlebotomy technique, including venipunctures and capillary sticks

Excellent verbal communication skills

Must be able to multi-task and be detailed oriented

Must be able to perform skills efficiently and accurately

License Registration Certification:

Certificate in Phlebotomy preferred or equivalent experience preferred

BCLS certification required from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
