Substitute School Bus Driver

Paradise Unified School District is seeking dependable, safety-minded individuals to join our Transportation Department as Substitute School Bus Drivers. This is a great opportunity for experienced school bus drivers who want flexibility in their schedules while continuing to serve students and the community. Substitute drivers may accept assignments based on District needs and their availability, making this an excellent option for retirees, part-time professionals, or drivers interested in getting their foot in the door with Paradise Unified School District. As a Substitute School Bus Driver, you will play an essential role in helping students arrive at school and return home safely. You may also support field trips, athletic events, school activities, and other District transportation needs.

Position Overview: Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation, the Substitute School Bus Driver safely transports students to and from school, field trips, activities, and other authorized locations. Drivers must safely operate a school bus on a variety of roads and in changing traffic and weather conditions, including mountainous and narrow roadways. Substitute drivers are also responsible for maintaining student safety, following established schedules, completing required vehicle inspections, and enforcing District bus rules.

Typical Responsibilities: Responsibilities may include: driving a school bus, escorting students across streets using the bus flashing red lights signal, transporting students and teachers on field trips to various locations, maintaining order and proper discipline of student passengers according to District policy, issuing written bus citations to students and communicating directly with parents regarding bus discipline problems, conducting safety and operational inspections of assigned bus daily prior to starting route, reporting needed mechanical repairs when necessary, servicing buses with gas, diesel fuel and oil; checking and filling tires and batteries, performing periodic safety drills as required by law; completing necessary reports upon request, maintaining cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition, completing mileage and other reports including passenger counts, adhering as closely as possible to established schedule of bus stop arrival and departure times, attending driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children, operating a two-way radio, chaining bus when road conditions deem it necessary, washing bus as needed, and performing related duties as required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability: Knowledge of California State Motor Vehicle Code, the California State Education Code and District policies and requirements related to the operation of vehicles used in the transport of students. Basic first aid practices, procedures and techniques. Safe driving practices. Skill and Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner. Establish and maintain proper student conduct on school vehicle. Drive a school bus safely and efficiently. Exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving. Maintain valid certification as a school bus driver according to State regulators. Meet the physical requirements necessary to safety and effectively perform required duties. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

Training and Experience: Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be: ability to read and write at a level sufficient to perform assigned duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: In order to perform this job successfully an individual must meet the physical requirements necessary to complete the essential job duties. Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend. Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
