Recreation Coordinator - General Interest
Department: Recreation
Reports To: Recreation Supervisor
Fair Labor Standards Act: Exempt
General Summary
Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator - General Interest is responsible for the development, implementation, promotion, administration, and evaluation of recreation programs, services, and community events serving participants of all ages and interests. This position oversees a diverse portfolio of programs, which may include youth, adult, aging adult, arts, cultural, educational, wellness, specialty, and contracted recreation programs. The Coordinator manages assigned budgets, community partnerships, special events, part-time staff, volunteers, and contract instructors while exercising independent judgment in assigned program areas.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Develop, implement, coordinate, promote, and evaluate recreation programs and services for diverse populations and interest areas.
  1. Assess community needs, participation trends, customer feedback, and program performance to identify new programming opportunities and recommend service improvements.
  1. Plan, coordinate, and evaluate community events, concerts, festivals, holiday celebrations, and other special events.
  1. Recruit, develop, and maintain relationships with contract instructors, vendors, sponsors, community organizations, and other program partners.
  1. Coordinate contracted recreation programs and monitor instructor performance, participant satisfaction, program quality, and compliance with District expectations.
  1. Coordinate facilities, equipment, supplies, staffing, and other operational resources necessary for successful program and event delivery.
  1. Assist with the development and administration of contracts, agreements, sponsorships, and community partnerships related to assigned programs and events.
  1. Develop, administer, and monitor assigned program and event budgets, including revenues, expenditures, participation levels, and cost-recovery objectives.
  1. Analyze program and operational performance and recommend adjustments to improve participation, service delivery, financial performance, and use of District resources.
  1. Recruit, train, supervise, schedule, coach, and evaluate assigned part-time and seasonal staff, instructors, and volunteers.
  1. Conduct staff orientations, meetings, and performance evaluations and provide ongoing leadership and operational direction.
  1. Promote professionalism, accountability, teamwork, safety, and excellent customer service among assigned staff and program partners.
  1. Provide accurate program descriptions, schedules, registration information, and other content necessary to support District marketing and communication efforts.
  1. Collaborate with Communications staff to promote programs, events, and outreach efforts designed to increase community awareness and participation.
  1. Respond to participant and public inquiries, concerns, and service issues related to assigned programs and events.
  1. Represent the District at community meetings, events, outreach activities, and partnership functions as assigned.
  1. Maintain accurate program records, reports, inventories, financial documentation, and other administrative records.
  1. Monitor and maintain program supplies and equipment and ensure responsible stewardship of District resources.
  1. Maintain knowledge of recreation industry trends, community needs, and best practices relevant to assigned program areas.
  1. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  1. Knowledge of recreation programming, special events, community engagement, and customer service principles and practices.
  1. Knowledge of budgeting, financial management, program revenue, and cost-recovery principles.
  1. Ability to develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate recreation programs, services, and special events.
  1. Ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with participants, community partners, contractors, vendors, sponsors, and District staff.
  1. Ability to effectively recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff, instructors, and volunteers.
  1. Ability to exercise sound judgment and independently manage assigned programs and responsibilities.
  1. Ability to manage multiple programs, projects, deadlines, and competing priorities.
  1. Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
  1. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, budgets, and program documentation.
  1. Proficiency with recreation management software and standard business technology.
  1. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  1. Work is performed in both office and recreation program environments and may include work at District facilities, community events, and outdoor locations.
  1. Frequent evening, weekend, holiday, and special-event work may be required based on operational and programming needs.
  1. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, lift, carry, and move program materials, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  1. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  1. Ability to move throughout recreation facilities, program areas, and event locations as necessary to perform assigned duties.

Education & Experience
  1. Bachelor's degree in Recreation Administration, Parks and Recreation Management, Event Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field required.
  1. Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in recreation programming, event management, community programming, or a related field required.
  1. Experience supervising part-time or seasonal staff, instructors, or volunteers preferred.
  1. Experience managing program budgets, revenues, and cost-recovery objectives preferred.
  1. Experience with RecTrac or similar recreation management software preferred.
  1. Valid Driver License with a satisfactory driving record required.
  1. Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification required within 30 days of employment.

Paid Time Off
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): 216 hours annually, accrued at 8.31 hours per pay period, for use toward vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
  • Extended Illness Bank (EIB): Accrues at 3 hours per pay period, up to a maximum of 480 hours, for use during qualifying FMLA leave.

Medical, Dental & Vision
  • The District pays 100% of monthly medical, dental, and vision premiums for the employee, spouse, and eligible dependents, representing an annual employer-paid value of approximately $9,600-$23,000, depending on coverage level.
  • Medical coverage is available through UnitedHealthcare or Kaiser Permanente, with $0 deductible plan options.
  • Dental coverage is provided through Delta Dental, and vision coverage through VSP.
  • Benefits are effective the first of the month following completion of the 30-day waiting period.
  • An alternative reimbursement option may be available for employees who maintain eligible medical coverage through a spouse's plan.

Retirement
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan: The District provides a 100% employer match on employee contributions up to 6% following six months of employment, subject to plan eligibility requirements.

District-Paid & Voluntary Insurance
  • Long-Term Disability (LTD): District-paid coverage providing partial income replacement for qualifying medical leaves.
  • Basic Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D): District-paid coverage equal to the employee's annual salary.
  • Voluntary Life Insurance: Employees may elect additional coverage of up to $150,000 without a medical examination during new-hire enrollment, with additional coverage options available for eligible spouses and dependents.
