Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we've designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
The MES team is seeking a Software Development Engineer to design, develop, and deploy Manufacturing Execution System software that drives satellite production operations. You will build and maintain the core MES platform capabilities that manage work orders, process routing, data collection, traceability, and production analytics across Leo's manufacturing facilities.
You will work directly within the MES team to solve complex challenges related to production orchestration, shop floor system integrations, and real-time manufacturing data management. This is a hands-on development role focused on building the software systems that enable repeatable, controlled, and scalable manufacturing execution.
Export Control: This position requires that the candidate selected be a U.S. Citizen in order to comply with U.S. government-imposed requirements related to the nature of the work and/or where it will be performed.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and develop MES application features including work order management, process routing, recipe management, data collection, and product traceability.
- Build and maintain integrations between the MES platform and shop floor control systems (e.g., Ignition), enabling real-time production monitoring and machine-level data exchange.
- Develop integrations between MES and enterprise systems including ERP, PLM, and quality management platforms.
- Implement manufacturing process enforcement logic within MES to ensure production steps are executed in the correct sequence with proper validations.
- Build data pipelines and reporting capabilities within the MES ecosystem to support production analytics, yield tracking, and KPI dashboards.
- Develop and maintain MES APIs and services that enable production teams to manage and monitor manufacturing operations.
- Write clean, well-tested, production-quality code following MES team coding standards and best practices.
- Implement system monitoring, alerting, and observability for MES services to ensure uptime and rapid issue detection.
- Troubleshoot and resolve MES application issues in production environments, performing root cause analysis and implementing permanent fixes.
- Support MES system upgrades, version migrations, and configuration changes across production environments.
- Develop automated testing frameworks for MES features to ensure reliability during deployments and upgrades.
- Participate in MES design reviews, code reviews, and sprint planning to deliver capabilities on schedule and with high quality.
- Contribute to MES system documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, and operational procedures.
- Support UAT activities with manufacturing end-users and incorporate feedback into MES application improvements.
- Participate in on-call rotations to maintain MES system availability and respond to production incidents.
A day in the life
As a member of the MES team, your day revolves around building and supporting the software that production teams rely on daily to manufacture satellites. You will write code for MES features, review pull requests from teammates, and work with manufacturing engineers who use the system to understand their pain points and requirements.
A typical day involves developing new MES capabilities (e.g., a new process routing workflow or integration endpoint), debugging production issues that affect manufacturing operations, participating in team standups and sprint ceremonies, and collaborating with MES TPMs and manufacturing stakeholders on upcoming feature priorities.
You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where system availability directly impacts production output, and where requirements evolve as production processes mature and scale.
About the team
The MES team builds and maintains the Manufacturing Execution System that powers Leo's satellite production operations. The team is responsible for the core MES platform - including work order management, process routing, data collection, traceability, and production reporting - as well as all integrations between MES and shop floor control systems like Ignition, ERP, PLM, and quality management systems.
The team's mission is to deliver a reliable, scalable MES platform that enables manufacturing teams to execute controlled, repeatable production processes while maintaining rigorous data integrity and compliance standards across Leo's internal facilities and contract manufacturing sites.
The MES team operates in Bellevue, WA, and works closely with manufacturing operations teams in Redmond and Kirkland, WA.
