PHARMACY TECHNICIAN: JOB DESCRIPTION

The following job description identifies the qualifications and standards for Pharmacy Technicians. Pharmacy Technicians will meet the following requirements and competencies listed below. Pharmacy Technicians report directly to the Pharmacist in Charge.

  1. Job Summary: The pharmacy technician serves an integral role by assisting the pharmacist in various operations within the pharmacy including, but not limited to:

    • โ– Processes and fills prescriptions for oral, rectal topical, and injectable medications.

    • โ– Prepares, packages, and delivers prescriptions.

    • โ– Orders and receives drug inventory and maintains adequate inventory of stock and supplies.

    • โ– Corresponds with patients and providers.

      A successful pharmacy technician will have strong communication skills and be able to perform detailed work. The pharmacy technician will work in multiple areas of the pharmacy as directed to maintain competency and broaden skills for all areas of the job scope.

  2. Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Demonstrates Competencies in the Following Areas:

  • โ– Files and retrieves pharmacy records as required.

  • โ– Obtains and documents accurate and complete patient medication histories.

  • โ– Accurately processes prescriptions (entry, adjudication, filling, point-of-sale).

  • โ– Assists in medication preparation by selecting, counting, packaging, delivering, and labeling per established guidelines.

  • โ– Packages medications in vials, compliance packaging, and single-med cold seal cards.

  • โ– Triages telephone calls in the pharmacy.

  • โ– Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in clean and orderly condition.

  • โ– Processes patient medication charges and credits as needed.

  • โ– Works directly with providersโ€™ offices and/or facilities as part of an interdisciplinary team- based approach to medication management.

  • โ– Inventory management; drug ordering and receiving per state and federal regulations.

  • โ– Conducts clerical and record keeping practices and procedures.

  • โ– Operates computer software (Rx30, Omnicell, Dispill, etc.) proficiently.

  • โ– Aids in continuity of care by coordinating prescription refills between providersโ€™ offices and subsequent delivery of medication to the patient.

  • โ– Advocates for patient health by navigating common barriers such as prior authorizations, patient assistance programs, sync fills, or delivery.

  • โ– Performs other pharmacy related duties as assigned.

  1. Professional Responsibilities:

    • โ– Completes annual continuing education requirements.

    • โ– Maintains regulatory requirements.

    • โ– Completes outdates and returns in a timely fashion.

    • โ– Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

    • โ– Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

    • โ– Complies with all organizational policies.

  2. Regulatory Requirements:

    • โ– Possess and maintain a valid professional license/certification/registration issued by the State Board of Pharmacy.

    • โ– Abide by and uphold the privacy rule standards of HIPAA.

  3. Minimum Employment Requirements:

    โ– High school diploma or GED.

  4. Preferred Qualifications:

    โ– Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification. โ– One (1) year related pharmacy experience.

  5. Language Skills:

    โ– Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.

  6. Skills:

    โ– Moderate computer knowledge.

  7. Physical Demands:
