What is a Real Estate Financial Modeling Internship?

A Real Estate Financial Modeling Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in analyzing real estate investments using financial models. Interns learn how to use tools like Excel to create projections, evaluate property values, and assess investment risks and returns. The role typically involves working with senior analysts or asset managers, participating in real estate transactions, and developing skills that are valuable for a career in real estate finance or investment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Real Estate Financial Modeling Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Real Estate Financial Modeling Intern, you need a solid understanding of finance, real estate concepts, and strong quantitative and analytical skills, often backed by coursework in finance, economics, or real estate. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Argus, and financial modeling software is crucial, as is the ability to interpret financial statements and market data. Attention to detail, strong communication, and a proactive attitude help interns stand out in team environments and when presenting analyses. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering accurate financial models, supporting investment decisions, and succeeding in the competitive real estate industry.

What types of projects and financial models do interns typically work on during a Real Estate Financial Modeling Internship?

During a Real Estate Financial Modeling Internship, interns often work on projects such as creating cash flow projections, analyzing investment returns, and constructing pro forma models for potential property acquisitions. You may be asked to assist with sensitivity analyses, build models for various asset classes (like multifamily, office, or retail), and prepare presentations for senior team members or clients. Interns commonly collaborate with acquisitions, asset management, and finance teams, gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard tools like Excel and Argus. This exposure helps develop both technical modeling skills and a practical understanding of real estate investment strategies.
