Ready Mix Operator information

What is a ready mix operator?

A Ready Mix Operator is responsible for overseeing the production and delivery of ready-mixed concrete from a batching plant to construction sites. Their duties typically include operating batching equipment, ensuring mix quality, coordinating with drivers, and maintaining safety standards. They also monitor inventory levels of materials like cement, sand, and aggregates, perform routine maintenance on equipment, and troubleshoot any production issues. Ready Mix Operators play a critical role in ensuring timely and accurate concrete deliveries that meet project specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ready mix operator?

To thrive as a Ready Mix Operator, you need knowledge of batching procedures, mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often with a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Familiarity with batching software, concrete mixers, and quality control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving abilities enable operators to manage schedules and ensure safety. These skills ensure the consistent production and delivery of high-quality concrete, meeting project specifications and safety standards.

What are some common challenges faced by ready mix operators and how can they be addressed?

Ready Mix Operators often encounter challenges such as managing tight delivery schedules, maintaining equipment, and ensuring consistent concrete quality. Handling unexpected equipment breakdowns or changes in weather conditions can also impact production and delivery. Staying proactive with routine maintenance, thorough communication with dispatch and construction teams, and adapting quickly to schedule changes can help address these challenges. Many companies offer ongoing training and support to help operators stay prepared and maintain safety standards.

What is the difference between Ready Mix Operator vs Concrete Batch Plant Operator?

While both roles involve working with concrete and require safety certifications, the Ready Mix Operator primarily focuses on operating trucks and delivering concrete to job sites. In contrast, the Concrete Batch Plant Operator manages the batching process at the plant, ensuring proper mix proportions and equipment operation. Both roles are essential in the concrete industry but differ in daily tasks and work environment.

How do I become a ready mix operator?

To become a ready mix operator, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training on operating concrete batching equipment. Many employers require certification in equipment operation or safety, and on-the-job training is common. Good mechanical skills and attention to safety protocols are important for success in this role.

Job Title: Ready Mix Driver   |   Req ID: 15717   |   Location: Manitoulin RM ON

ABOUT THE ROLE

Drive for the Premiere Ready-Mix Provider. This isn't just a driving job; it's a career with Amrize Canada Inc., a leader in the Ontario construction industry. We are looking for dedicated Class AZ or DZ drivers to join our team and be responsible for the safe and timely delivery of concrete to various job sites in and around the M'Chigeeng area. At Amrize Canada Inc., we pride ourselves on maintaining a "premiere" standard-from the quality of our concrete to the safety of our fleet.

Hourly Wage to Start: $25.30/Hour as per the collective agreement.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Safely transport and deliver ready-mix concrete to the region's most iconic infrastructure and residential projects.
  • Operate late-model, well-maintained Class AZ or DZ trucks (manual transmission), performing meticulous pre/post-trip inspections to ensure your vehicle is road-ready.
  • Act as a professional brand ambassador on-site, fostering strong relationships with our diverse customer base.
  • Champion a "Zero Harm" culture by adhering to strict health, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Take advantage of internal promotion opportunities and professional development within our global network.
  • Perform daily inspections of assigned ready-mix trucks and document findings.
  • Load and unload concrete according to strict safety procedures and customer mix specifications.
  • Maintain digital/manual delivery logs and complete all necessary project paperwork.
  • Maintain constant, professional communication with Dispatch and Plant Personnel.
  • Perform minor routine maintenance and keep the cab and exterior of the vehicle clean.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviours.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Valid Class AZ or DZ Driver's License with an Air Brake (Z) Endorsement.
  • Proven experience operating manual transmissions.
  • Previous experience in construction delivery or heavy vehicle operation is an asset. We do provide training and safety training for those new to the industry.
  • A clean driving record (CVOR/Abstract) and a rock-solid commitment to safety.
  • Ability to handle the physical demands of the role, including climbing truck ladders and lifting chutes.
  • Availability for Monday to Friday shifts, with Saturdays and evenings as required by our high-volume project schedule.
  • Must meet requirements for distance, peripheral, and depth perception to navigate busy construction sites.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.

  • Healthy Living support through an EFAP, offering confidential assistance for work, health, or life challenges.
  • Service recognition awards to celebrate your contributions.
  • Perks & discounts on a variety of products and services.
  • An inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can be themselves.
  • A collaborative work culture in a supportive and team-oriented work environment.
