Employers in tech companies and startups often seek both, but React Developers are more specialized in React-based projects.

What are React Developers?

React Developers are software engineers who specialize in building user interfaces using the React JavaScript library. They design and implement interactive components on web applications, ensuring seamless and efficient user experiences. Their responsibilities often include coding, debugging, optimizing performance, and collaborating with designers and backend developers. React Developers need a strong understanding of JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and the React framework. They may also work with related tools like Redux, TypeScript, and testing libraries.

Is React developer still in demand?

React developers are currently in high demand due to the widespread use of React for building dynamic web applications. Skills in JavaScript, React, and related tools like Redux or TypeScript enhance employability, and demand is expected to remain strong as companies continue to adopt modern front-end frameworks.

What Does a React Developer Do?

As a React developer, you work in a comprehensive JavaScript library known as React. Your responsibilities are to design, develop, and implement this front-end technology for businesses. Your software includes user-facing features that consist of reusable components for future use. Other duties include testing software for functionality issues, translating designs into code, and optimizing components for optimum performance. Part of your job is utilizing workflows such as Flux and Redux to complete tasks. You also coordinate with teams to ensure each layer of the infrastructure works together.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a React Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a React Developer, you need a solid understanding of JavaScript, ES6+, HTML, CSS, and a proven track record with React.js and related libraries. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, package managers such as npm or Yarn, and experience with build tools and testing frameworks are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding developers apart. These competencies ensure you can build efficient, maintainable user interfaces and collaborate effectively within development teams.

What are the most common challenges React Developers face when working on large-scale applications?

React Developers working on large-scale applications often encounter challenges such as managing complex state logic, ensuring code maintainability, and optimizing application performance. Collaborating effectively with backend teams and coordinating updates in component libraries are also crucial. Additionally, keeping up with the evolving React ecosystem and integrating third-party tools or libraries can require ongoing learning and adaptation. Leveraging best practices like code splitting, lazy loading, and clear state management patterns can help address these challenges.

What is the average salary for React devs?

The average salary for React developers varies by experience and location but generally ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually in many regions. Junior developers typically earn lower salaries, while experienced React developers with additional skills in JavaScript, Redux, or TypeScript can command higher pay. Certifications and working in high-demand markets can also influence salary levels.

Can I learn React in 5 days?

React developers typically require several weeks to months of consistent study to gain proficiency, as React involves understanding JavaScript, component-based architecture, and related tools like JSX and state management. While basic concepts can be grasped quickly, becoming proficient for a job usually requires ongoing practice and real-world experience.

Is React still in demand in 2026?

React Developer remains a highly sought-after role in 2026 due to the continued popularity of React for building user interfaces and single-page applications. Demand is driven by the need for modern web development skills, with proficiency in JavaScript, JSX, and related tools like Redux or Next.js often required. Staying updated with the latest React features and best practices can enhance job prospects in this field.

Job description

We are driven to do more. More for our customers and the financial professionals who offer our products. If you are driven to do more and love the challenge of pursuing more, Athene is your kind of company. You will find we offer more than the basics to create an inclusive and dynamic work environment at our various locations.

Purpose:

The Opportunity
Vitera is Apollo and Athene's highest-conviction growth channel in retirement income - and we're building the engineering team that will define how it scales. This isn't a maintenance role. You'll be architecting and shipping cloud-native applications at the center of a product that genuinely changes how Americans retire, while helping us reinvent how software gets built in an AI-first world.
What Vitera Is
Vitera turns retirement savings into guaranteed lifetime income - automatically, flexibly, and simply. No complexity, no fine print, no anxiety. Backed by Apollo, Athene we're setting a new standard for what retirement income can look like: clear, accessible, and built on trust. The engineering you ship here directly determines whether someone spends their retirement with confidence or uncertainty.

Accountabilities:

What You'll Actually Do

You'll build full stack applications and cloud services across a modern, collaborative engineering stack - owning features end to end, from API design through to user-facing UI. But the work goes beyond shipping features.

You'll be one of the engineers helping us redefine our agentic AI SDLC- rethinking how we plan, build, test, and deploy software when AI agents are part of the team. This is frontier work. You'll have real influence over how Vitera engineers ship software for years to come.

Qualifications and Experience:

What You Need to Bring
  • 6+ years of relevant software engineering experience designing and building cloud-native applications using modern JavaScript frameworks, Node.js, React.js, AWS services, and API technologies or relevant experience.

  • Experience developing secure applications utilizing AWS services (Lambda, API Gateway, S3, RDS, IAM), RESTful and GraphQL APIs, authentication technologies (JWT/OAuth), PostgreSQL databases, and Git-based version control.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, solve complex problems, influence technical decisions, and thrive in Agile development environments while embracing innovation, adaptability, AI-enabled development practices, and continuous learning.

  • Strong collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills with the ability to partner effectively across engineering, product, architecture, and business teams while embodying Athene's BEAM values.

  • Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. Military experience will be considered in lieu of a formal degree.

Drive. Discipline. Confidence. Focus. Commitment. Learn more about working at Athene.

Athene is a Military Friendly Employer! Learn more about how we support our Veterans.

Athene is committed to inclusion and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, veteran status or any other status protected by federal, state or local law.
