How long is an RDAEF program?

The RDAEF (Registered Dental Assistant Extended Function) program typically takes about 6 to 12 months to complete, depending on the specific course structure and whether it is part-time or full-time. It includes both classroom instruction and clinical practice to prepare dental assistants for expanded duties and certification requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF), and why are they important?

To thrive as an RDAEF, you need a solid foundation in dental assisting, advanced clinical procedures, and a valid RDAEF certification. Familiarity with dental radiography, digital charting software, and specialized dental instruments is critical. Excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and a compassionate demeanor help build patient trust and support effective teamwork. These competencies ensure high-quality patient care, procedural accuracy, and efficient dental practice operations.

What are RDAEFs?

RDAEF stands for Registered Dental Assistant in Expanded Functions. These dental professionals are licensed to perform advanced dental procedures under the supervision of a dentist, beyond what standard dental assistants can do. Their duties often include tasks such as placing and finishing restorations, taking impressions, and applying sealants, which require additional training and certification. RDAEFs play a critical role in dental offices, helping to improve patient care and workflow efficiency.

What Does an RDAEF Do?

RDAEF stands for registered dental assistant in extended functions, known in some states as Expanded Functions Dental Assistants (EFDAs). As an RDAEF, your duties are somewhat more expansive than a normal dental assistant and may include taking X-rays and impressions, pouring models, and fabricating temporary crowns and bridges. You place, contour, and adjust permanent fillings, cement crowns, and size and place points after root canals. As part of your general responsibilities, you prepare patients and rooms for dental procedures, maintain patient records, sterilize instruments, operate dental tools during appointments and treatment, schedule patient appointments, and oversee billing and insurance tasks.

What can an RDAEF do?

An RDAEF (Registered Dental Assistant Extended Function) is qualified to perform advanced dental procedures under the supervision of a dentist, such as placing and finishing restorations, applying sealants, and taking impressions. They often work in dental offices with additional certifications and must adhere to state regulations governing their scope of practice.

How much does a RDAEF make?

In California, a Registered Dental Assistant Extended Function (RDAEF) typically earns between $25 and $45 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer. The average annual salary ranges from approximately $50,000 to $90,000, with additional benefits often included.

How does an RDAEF typically collaborate with dentists and other dental team members during complex procedures?

As a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF), you work closely with dentists, hygienists, and other assistants, especially during advanced restorative and prosthetic procedures. RDAEFs are often responsible for tasks such as placing and finishing restorations, taking impressions, and performing coronal polishing, all under the supervision of a licensed dentist. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you may be coordinating the workflow, prepping materials, and ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure. This collaborative environment provides opportunities to develop advanced clinical skills and expand your professional role within the dental team.

Is it better to be a CDA or RDA?

A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) is a credential earned after completing required education and passing an exam, while a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is a state-specific license or registration. Both roles involve assisting dentists with patient care and procedures, but requirements and job opportunities vary by state; generally, becoming a CDA can provide broader recognition and mobility across states.
