Job description

  • JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
    • The Diabetes Care & Education Specialist collaborates with team members to develop and implement teaching plans and patient education materials based on national standards for patients of varying ages with diabetes, gestational diabetes, or pre-diabetes. Assists in development of educational programs for staff, support groups, students, interns and others as needed.
  • DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
    • Samaritan's Nationally Accredited Diabetes Education Programs utilize the advanced knowledge and skills of their interdisciplinary team - made of RN's and RD's who collaborate to offer group and individual appointments for education, medication management, behavior change, as well as working with physicians to better manage their patients and families with diabetes and serving as a resource for those interested in the most current diabetes treatment strategies. The department also plays an integral role in the hospital setting as well, working with hospital staff in the care and management of people with diabetes while hospitalized.
  • EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
    • One (1) of the following required:
      • Current unencumbered Oregon RN license.
      • Graduate of accredited dietetic program in university or college, with completion of accredited dietetic internship. Current unencumbered Oregon Dietetic Licensure/Registered Dietitian through the CDR or RD eligible. If RD eligible, must obtain Registered Dietitian and Oregon Dietitian License within six (6) months from date of hire.
    • Certification as a Diabetes Educator (CDE/CDCES) within three (3) years of hire required.
    • Healthcare Provider BLS required upon hire.
    • Bachelor's degree, membership in a professional organization and prior teaching experience preferred.
    • Clinical experience as a RN or RD, with emphasis on providing care to patients with diabetes and/or chronic disease management preferred.

    • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication skills to perform group presentations, tactfully discuss issues, and listen to and understand complex information/situations. Ability to work with all levels within the organization, facilitate communication, and effectively document related activities.
    • Customer Service: Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
    • Problem Solving: Ability to identify complex problems, review related information, employ creativity and alternative thinking to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
    • Social Perceptiveness: Ability to work with a diverse population from pediatrics to geriatrics. Basic understanding of age-related differences in caring for and communicating with patients and caregivers. Possess personal sensitivity to the needs and experiences of others and a non-judgmental attitude towards persons of differing standards, values, lifestyles, and ages.
    • Time Management: Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work to complete within required time frames and to follow-up on pending issues. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in dynamic fast-paced environments and under pressure.
    • Adaptability/Flexibility: Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to urgent medical situations that may arise with high risk or diverse patient populations. Ability to adjust actions in relation to others and adapt treatment to offer best possible care to patients.
