What is a Range Rider job?

A Range Rider is responsible for monitoring and managing livestock on open rangelands, ensuring they remain within designated grazing areas while protecting them from predators and environmental hazards. They often work on horseback or ATVs, checking fences, water sources, and forage conditions. Range Riders may also assist with herding, branding, and medical care of livestock, depending on the employer's needs. Their role is crucial in maintaining sustainable grazing practices and ensuring livestock health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Range Rider position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Range Rider, you need strong livestock management abilities, wilderness navigation skills, and knowledge of rangeland ecology, often supported by experience with ranching or natural resource management. Familiarity with GPS devices, mapping tools, radio communications, and sometimes certification in animal handling or first aid are commonly required. Outstanding observation, resilience, problem-solving, and effective communication enable a Range Rider to work independently and coordinate with landowners, agencies, and team members. These skills are vital for ensuring livestock health, protecting natural resources, and maintaining collaborative relationships across vast and remote grazing areas.

What does a typical day look like for a Range Rider, and how much time is spent outdoors?

A typical day for a Range Rider involves patrolling rangelands on horseback, ATV, or by foot to monitor livestock, check fencing and water supplies, and assess for potential hazards such as predators or invasive species. Most of the work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and across rugged terrain. Range Riders often work independently but also communicate regularly with ranch owners, land managers, and sometimes wildlife biologists to report observations and coordinate plans. Flexibility in working hours is common, especially during critical periods like calving season or when addressing urgent issues. This role is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on work in natural settings and can adapt to the unpredictability of outdoor environments.

Job description

To thrive as a Warehouse Equipment Operator, you must have a commitment to safety. You will safely operate warehouse equipment within our distribution center to load and unload products from inbound and outbound trailers or to stock and rotate inventory.
Each day, you will operate a sit-down forklift with a slip-sheet attachment, reach truck (up to 35 feet), or a rider jack to load and unload product from the dock or to restock and rotate dated product. A scanner gun or wand will be used to check shipments, identify errors or defects, and record any discrepancies. You will be responsible for rotating items by stock number and placing them on the correct shelf and in the correct aisle. In addition, routine quality inspections will be performed on inventory to report on any possible damage, shortages, or errors. Some heavy lifting is also required for this role.
Here's what we're looking for from you:
  • A commitment to safety. We are very proud of our safety record and want you to be a part of that. You will be required to wear proper safety equipment, including steel-toed shoes and safety glasses.

  • Attend training. You won't be able to operate warehouse equipment until you are fully trained. You will begin with safety training and other equipment training.

  • Attention to detail. You will need to closely monitor stock numbers, identify defects in inventory, and be mindful of your surroundings when moving products.

  • Diploma or GED. A high school diploma or GED is required.

  • Knowledge of basic math is required.

  • Some experience operating a sit-down forklift, reach truck, or rider jack is preferred.

Here's what we offer you:
  • Warehouse Equipment Operators start at xxx/hr. Team members will receive a $1/hr increase at 6 months of employment and another $1/hr increase at one year of employment.
