Job description

The Manual Machinist/Precision Grinder plays a critical role in machining and fabricating high-precision parts using both manual and specialized grinding machines, including CNC equipment. This position requires interpreting basic mechanical drawings, setting up and operating various manual machines such as lathes, mills, and drill presses, and maintaining tooling and equipment to ensure superior quality and dimensional accuracy. The machinist will collaborate within a medium-sized team to uphold rigorous quality assurance standards through precise machining techniques and regular equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints and engineering drawings to determine grinding speeds, feed rates, and tooling needs
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC grinding machines, including surface, cylindrical, jig, and centerless grinders
  • Perform manual machining operations on lathes, mills, and drill presses
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges for quality control and part inspection
  • Select, mount, and dress grinding wheels to maintain surface quality and prevent workpiece damage
  • Troubleshoot machine performance, adjusting offsets and coolant flow to maintain thermal stability of parts
  • Design, fabricate, rebuild, and repair tooling, jigs, fixtures, dies, and molds essential for manufacturing
  • Perform minor mechanical maintenance and adjustments on equipment

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in precision machining
  • Proficient in blueprint reading of basic mechanical drawings
  • Skilled in mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Experienced in manual lathe, milling machine, and drill press operation
  • Familiarity with CNC machining processes
  • Proficient in using micrometers, calipers, and various gauges for quality inspection
  • Knowledge of grinding techniques and wheel maintenance
  • Basic welding skills
  • Fabrication skills related to tooling and part production
