What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ruby on Rails Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ruby on Rails Developer, you need strong skills in Ruby programming, web application development, and a solid understanding of MVC architecture, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Proficiency with tools like Git, databases (such as PostgreSQL or MySQL), and deployment platforms, along with familiarity with testing frameworks, is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication skills help developers work efficiently within teams and adapt to evolving project requirements. These skills are critical to delivering robust, scalable applications and ensuring smooth project execution in dynamic software environments.

Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding libraries that extend Rails functionalityHiring or hiring for Rails development roles

In summary, a Rails Library is a collection of code that adds specific features to Rails applications, often used by developers. A Rails Developer, however, is a professional who builds, maintains, and enhances entire Rails applications. While libraries are tools used by developers, the developer role encompasses the full development process.

What is a Rails Library?

A Rails Library is a collection of reusable code, modules, or components designed to extend or enhance the functionality of Ruby on Rails applications. These libraries, often called 'gems,' help developers add features such as authentication, file uploads, or API integrations without writing everything from scratch. By using Rails Libraries, developers can save time, maintain cleaner code, and leverage best practices established by the community.

What are some common challenges faced by developers working on a Rails library, and how can they be addressed?

Developers working on a Rails library often encounter challenges such as maintaining compatibility with multiple Rails versions, ensuring robust test coverage, and managing open-source contributions. Staying up-to-date with the Rails framework's updates is crucial to prevent deprecation issues. Collaborating effectively with other contributors, documenting code thoroughly, and setting up automated testing workflows can significantly help overcome these challenges and ensure the library remains reliable and widely usable.

This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.

We are looking for someone to apply their hardware design technical expertise, natural leadership, organizational skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact the bold missions at Blue Origin. As an Avionics PCB Librarian within this Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE) PCB design team, you will apply your understanding of digital, analog, mixed-signal, high-speed, RF and high-power PCB design and components to develop and maintain our company-wide eCAD parts library.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain corporate eCAD component libraries, including part footprints, schematic symbols and related component information
  • Design and layout common circuit blocks to support high-performance, high-reliability PCBs development for aerospace applications
  • Work with Altium Designer to create detailed PCB layout design files from schematics (Gerbers and FAB & ASY drawings, and other relevant documentation)
  • Ensure design and manufacturing practices adhere to industry standards and regulations
  • Troubleshoot and resolve PCB design and layout issues
  • Contribute to PCB/PCBA design reviews by providing design artifacts, DFM/DFA/DFT assessments and similar value-added info
  • Collaborate in defining PCB development process improvements (procedures and checklists)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams of mechanical, electrical, firmware and software engineers to ensure design requirements are met
  • Check the quality of work of other layout resources, including internal and external resources
  • Support and mentor internal layout resources (junior engineers and technicians) on PCB design (library and layout) best practices

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience creating and maintaining PCB part libraries (schematic symbols & footprints)
  • Adjacent experience in PCB layout and design, specifically in the aerospace and defense industry
  • Expert proficiency using Altium Designer Pro/365/Enterprise for PCB design (library and layout)
  • Experienced use of PCB best practices for design, manufacturing, assembly and testing (including IPC-6012 Class 3 standards and IPC-7352)

  • Experience in designing High-Density Interconnect (HDI) boards with fine pitch BGA (FPGAs, processors, microcontrollers, and other ASICs); including thru-hole and microvias, blind-buried vias, etc.
  • Experience with High-Speed, High-Power and High-Density Interconnect board design and layout; including signal integrity constraints, impedance-controlled nets and stack-up.
  • Experience routing multi-rail power delivery solutions, and high-power thermal management and other mechanical constraints.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced and high-pressure environments, earn trust, and maintain positive and professional relationships; demonstrate attention to detail, strong task ownership and excellent communication skills
