Job Description


The Superintendent is a field-based position that actively participates in and coordinates work on railroad construction and design build projects, supervises the field crew and is responsible for the completion of all projects in a safe and timely manner while utilizing the highest quality of workmanship and meeting budgetary expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Planswork activities with Project Manager to develop best means and methods, including safety action plans.
  • Reviews all contracts, project documentation and plans to ensure that the work in the field is built to the most recent specifications.
  • Plans the day-to-day operations on assigned project and ensures that proper resources are in place for the timely completion of work, including labor, tools, equipment and material.
  • Takes responsibility for crew performance as it relates to company goals, safety audits, and following company policies and procedures.
  • Plans, schedules and manages crews comprised of 20-25 employees including foremen, operators and laborers.
  • Initiates follow up action as necessary including training, orientation, discipline, etc.
  • Supervises work and complies with the FRA track safety standards and Roadway Worker Safety Rules.
  • Conducts daily briefing with crew to review production goals, performance feedback, safety and schedule, hazards, and to solicit feedback from the workers.
  • Maintains a dedication to safety at all times by modeling, providing education and enforcing safe work practices and company policies and procedures.
  • Make sure the proper safety equipment is available and used by all field personnel.
  • Communicates with customer and ensures a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Ensures crew member time sheets are properly submitted.
  • Unloads and spreads all ties, spikes and associated OTM.
  • Changes out ties and/or switch timbers as marked by the owner and in accordance with project specifications.
  • Gauges track along the tie change-out area as directed by the owner and contract specifications.


Overall coordination of the crew including:


  • Coordinating and scheduling crew members to be at the site at the desired time.
  • Setting up hotel rooms for crew members.
  • Fueling of machines prior to each shift and or as necessary.
  • Ensuring the operators provide walk around forms as directed for Roadway Maintenance Machines.
  • Ensure that equipment is operated properly to mitigate damage.
  • Ensuring the overall safety, quality and production of the gang.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance with mechanic to keep equipment operating efficiently.
  • Communicates with contractors or sub-contractors to coordinate work, goals, etc.


Operates Company vehicle, CDL/Medical Card preferred.



Qualifications Needed:


  • 5+ years of experience in railroad construction.
  • Extensive experience in supervising and managing railroad tie gang operations.
  • Must qualify in track inspection as required by FRA.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of track construction and maintenance including track, turnout and crossing construction, tie and rail replacement, track surfacing and thermite welding.
  • Previous supervision of projects.
  • Ability to train and motivate workers.
  • Ability to read and understand project specific documents including schedules, standard railway plans and specifications.
  • Ability to oversee the work of others and clearly communicate instructions to crew.
  • Strong client relation skills.
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work being performed.
  • Ability to understand and expertly carry out instructions.
  • Ability to keep records and to prepare production reports, time sheets, equipment logs, inspection reports, change orders and updating project files.
  • Ability to perform other administrative and/or project-based duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to travel 90-100%
  • Basic computer and mobile device proficiency.
  • Independent starter and must be Self-motivated with good communication skills
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather
