Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is routine work in the custodial care of buildings and surrounding grounds of the County of Somerset. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher level custodian or other supervisor. Assignments are limited in nature and are carried out in accordance with detailed instructions. Activities affect the cleaning and maintenance of an assigned building or area. Work involves some disagreeable aspects and required light physical effort.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESOPONSIBILITIES:

· Mops and scrubs floors; waxes and polishes floors and furniture; dusts furniture; cleans and polishes brass; cleans lavatories and replaces lavatory supplies; disposes of waste paper.

· Cuts grass, trims hedges, shovels snow, sweeps and cleans walks and assists in keeping outside premises in an orderly condition.

· Replaces light bulbs; makes simple repairs to buildings and equipment; repairs and adjusts cleaning equipment; reports damage to structures and equipment that requires repair.

· Moves furniture and equipment; delivers supplies; runs errands; serves as guard or night watchman as an incidental assignment.

· General maintenance to County-owned bridges including, but not limited to, cutting grass around bridges, replacing planks and stringers, and installing guide-rail.

· Knowledge of basic plumbing

· Performs related work as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

· Ability to learn the operation and care of vacuum cleaners, scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.

· Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

· Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment.

· Ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces.

· Ability to work harmoniously with fellow workers and others.

ELIGIBILITY – ALL CANDIDATES MUST

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in custodial and routine maintenance operations.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in the operation of boilers in the heating plant.
  • Have a valid driver’s license
