Job description

Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of electrical schematics and ability to troubleshoot miswires

• Ability to bend pipe, tube, or conduit from drawings, procedures, or mock-ups

• Capability to perform proper wiring

• Efficient assembly and installation of pipe, tube, or conduit on rail cars based on drawings

 

Responsibilities:

Rail Car Technicians must be multi-crafted to perform basic work assignments across the following four areas:

 

Mechanical:

• Efficiently and properly performs metal finishing

• Sets up all work on a rail car from drawings, procedures, and written or verbal instructions

• Creates production aids such as templates and hand jigs

• Performs acceptable repairs on any material

• Builds jigs, fixtures, and other production time-saving devices from drawings

• Efficiently uses hand and power (electrical and pneumatic) tools

• Performs soldering for wire connections

 

Machine Operation:

• Performs all aspects of machine work from layout to finished parts based on drawings or instructions, including acceptable repairs

• Efficiently sets up and operates all machinery and tooling in the metal fabrication shop

 

Brazing/Welding:

• Performs mock-ups of all pipe, tube, or conduit from piping schematics in a rail car and performs necessary repairs

• Creates jigs for spot welding aids, such as templates and clamping fixtures

 

Troubleshooting:

• Diagnoses and resolves technical and operational issues as required
