How much do radiochemistry jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for radiochemistry in the United States is $26.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.80 and $30.05 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is radiochemistry?

A Radiochemistry job involves working with radioactive materials to study their properties and applications. Radiochemists typically handle tasks such as isotope production, radiation safety, environmental monitoring, and nuclear medicine research. They may work in industries like healthcare, nuclear energy, environmental science, or government research facilities. Their responsibilities often include analyzing radioactive substances, developing radiopharmaceuticals, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

What does a radiochemist do?

Radiochemists spend their days conducting experiments involving radioactive materials, preparing and analyzing samples, maintaining lab safety protocols, and documenting results for research or regulatory purposes. They often operate specialized equipment such as radiation detectors, liquid scintillation counters, and chromatography systems. Collaboration with other scientists, health physicists, and engineers is common, especially on projects in nuclear medicine, environmental monitoring, or energy research. The work environment is highly structured to ensure safety and compliance, with regular training and updates on best practices. This role offers a dynamic mix of hands-on lab work, data analysis, and team-based problem-solving.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a radiochemist?

To thrive in radiochemistry, you need a solid understanding of chemistry, physics, and radiation safety protocols, typically backed by a degree in chemistry or a related scientific field. Experience with laboratory instrumentation, radiochemical analytical techniques, and certifications such as HAZMAT or radiation safety are often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate scientific findings clearly help set candidates apart. These skills ensure the safe handling of radioactive materials, accurate experimental results, and effective collaboration within multidisciplinary research or medical teams.

How much does a radiochemistry make?

Radiochemists typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Advanced roles or those in research and development may offer higher compensation, especially with specialized skills and certifications in nuclear chemistry or radiological safety.

What degree do you need to be a radiochemistry?

A career in radiochemistry typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in chemistry, radiochemistry, nuclear engineering, or a related field. Advanced positions often require a master's or doctoral degree, along with laboratory skills and knowledge of radiation safety protocols.
