| Aspect | Radioactive Material Shipper | Radioactive Material Receiver |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Prepares, packages, and documents radioactive materials for shipment | Receives, inspects, and handles incoming radioactive shipments |
| Certifications | Hazardous Materials Certification, Radiation Safety Training | Radiation Safety Training, Hazardous Materials Certification |
| Work Environment | Shipping facilities, laboratories, warehouses | Receiving docks, storage areas, laboratories |
| Industry Usage | Logistics, shipping companies, nuclear industry | Research labs, hospitals, nuclear facilities |
While both roles require knowledge of radiation safety and hazardous materials handling, the Radioactive Material Shipper focuses on preparing and documenting shipments, whereas the Radioactive Material Receiver handles incoming shipments and ensures proper receipt and storage. Understanding these differences helps clarify job responsibilities within the radioactive materials industry.

Certified Health Physicist (CHP), National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT), or the ability and willingness to obtain such credentials
Experience with uranium mine or mill remediation, source material storage, or radioactive material shipping.
Experience preparing for and responding to regulatory inspections, audits, enforcement actions, corrective action programs, or license amendment activities.
Experience with environmental sampling, gamma walkover surveys, MARSSIM-style survey design, data quality objectives, GIS/GPS field data collection, and radiological characterization reports.
Minimum of 10 years of practical experience in health physics, radiation protection, radiological controls, uranium recovery, environmental remediation, or decommissioning.
Demonstrated working knowledge of radiation protection principles, ALARA implementation, contamination control, dosimetry, air monitoring, instrumentation, shielding, survey methods, and radiological work planning.
Experience interpreting and applying applicable radiation safety regulations, license conditions, and site procedures.
Ability to prepare clear technical reports, procedures, corrective action documents, survey packages, training materials, and regulatory support documentation.

Typical Job Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the RSO with managing the radiation protection programs for three different radioactive materials licenses: HPSA multi-site license, DISA's Mills laboratory license, and the Naturita storage license.
Develop, implement, and continually improve radiation protection and radiological controls procedures consistent with regulatory, license, and company requirements.
Perform and oversee radiological surveys, contamination surveys, airborne radioactivity monitoring at our remote job sites, and at the storage and laboratory facilities including dose rate measurements, and release surveys for personnel, equipment, materials, and work areas.
Evaluate radiological hazards associated with uranium, source material, sealed sources, radiation-producing devices, and contaminated equipment or structures.
Prepare radiation work permits, technical procedures, survey plans, sampling plans, exposure evaluations, and radiological control instructions.
Provide field support and technical direction for remediation, decommissioning, waste handling, and source material storage.
Manage or support personnel dosimetry programs, internal and external dose assessments, bioassay evaluations, exposure investigations, and annual dose reporting.
Investigate radiological incidents, contamination events, abnormal survey results, elevated dose conditions, and procedural non-compliances; identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
Support radioactive material inventory control, labeling, storage, transfer, waste characterization, shipment preparation, and documentation.
Calibrate, check, select, and troubleshoot radiation detection instruments, including alpha, beta, gamma, neutron, contamination, air sampling, and dose rate instruments.
Prepare technical reports, survey records, regulatory submittals, inspection responses, audit findings, and management summaries related to radiation protection activities.
May require travel to remote remediation sites, regulatory meetings, audits, inspections, or emergency response activities. Travel time could reach 50% during some months.
