Radiation Shielding Engineer information

What is a radiation shielding engineer?

A Radiation Shielding Engineer is a specialized professional who designs and implements protective barriers to shield people, equipment, and the environment from harmful ionizing radiation. They work in industries such as nuclear power, medical imaging, and research laboratories to ensure that radiation exposure stays within safe limits. Their responsibilities include analyzing radiation levels, selecting appropriate materials for shielding, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Radiation Shielding Engineers play a vital role in protecting public health and safety where radiation is present.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a radiation shielding engineer?

To thrive as a Radiation Shielding Engineer, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, usually supported by a degree in nuclear, mechanical, or health physics engineering. Familiarity with Monte Carlo simulation software, radiation transport codes (such as MCNP or FLUKA), and relevant safety regulations is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for designing safe environments, ensuring regulatory compliance, and effectively conveying complex technical information.

What are some common challenges faced by radiation shielding engineers when designing protective barriers for new facilities?

Radiation Shielding Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing strict regulatory requirements with practical construction limitations and budget constraints. They must accurately model radiation sources and interactions with various materials, which requires a strong understanding of both physics and engineering software. Collaboration with architects, health physicists, and construction teams is crucial to ensure that shielding designs are both effective and feasible. Staying updated with evolving safety standards and integrating new technologies can also present ongoing professional challenges.

What is the difference between Radiation Shielding Engineer vs Nuclear Safety Engineer?

AspectRadiation Shielding EngineerNuclear Safety Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in radiation safetyEngineering or science degree, nuclear safety certifications
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, nuclear power plants, medical facilitiesNuclear plants, regulatory agencies, safety analysis environments
Industry UsageDesigning shielding for radiation protectionEnsuring nuclear plant safety and compliance

Radiation Shielding Engineers focus on designing and implementing shielding solutions to protect against radiation exposure, often working in medical, research, or nuclear power settings. Nuclear Safety Engineers concentrate on maintaining safety standards, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance within nuclear facilities. While both roles require knowledge of radiation and safety protocols, their primary responsibilities and work environments differ.

Job description

Project Engineer, Shielding Systems

Our client is a specialty construction and controlled environment company that designs, builds, and services cleanrooms, dry rooms, radiation shielding systems, and interior construction for pharma, semiconductor, aerospace, defense, and medical clients.

What Our Client Offers

  • 401K with company matching and a profit sharing plan
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage, 100% paid by the company for the employee and entire family
  • Competitive base salary of $120,000 to $135,000, commensurate with experience
  • Paid time off
  • A matrixed, collaborative environment working alongside engineering and operations leadership

Position Summary
The Project Engineer, Shielding Systems bridges complex engineering design and flawless field execution. This role takes technical ownership of shielding projects immediately after purchase order award. Starting from a 50% design concept, this individual completes high precision 3D mechanical modeling in SolidWorks, oversees fabrication vetting, and manages the project through delivery, acting as the primary project manager for installation and quality control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take over 50% conceptual designs and develop them into fully realized 3D part models, large assemblies, and complete 2D manufacturing and installation drawings in SolidWorks
  • Design shielding components in lead, steel, and specialized concrete with field tolerances and constructability in mind
  • Perform structural, stress, and deflection analyses on heavy shielding assemblies to ensure safety and regulatory compliance
  • Own project delivery from kickoff to final client sign off, including schedules, budgets, and resource management
  • Identify, vet, and technically manage vendors for specialized components such as heavy duty hinges, automated door actuators, and radiation seals
  • Serve as primary technical and logistical point of contact for clients, architects, and site managers
  • Oversee subcontractors and field crews during installation to ensure adherence to drawings
  • Implement and enforce a rigorous, project specific quality control plan, inspecting fabricated parts and field modifications
  • Lead the engineering change process and document field modifications back into SolidWorks for final as built record packages

Must Have Qualifications

  • Expert level SolidWorks proficiency, including 3D modeling, large assembly management, and GD&T drawings
  • 5+ years of experience in a dual engineering and project management role
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • Proven track record designing mechanical systems or structural enclosures that were successfully built and installed without major field rework
  • Experience with project management software such as Procore, MS Project, or Autodesk Build
  • Willingness to travel to project sites to manage installations and audit quality control

Strong Differentiators

  • Background in specialty construction, heavy industrial equipment manufacturing, or radiation shielding
  • Hands on experience with lead, steel, or specialized concrete shielding assemblies
  • Structural, stress, or deflection analysis capability

More About You
We like your background and want to submit you to our client.
