JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Radiation Oncology serves as the senior administrative leader for the Radiation Oncology services across UT Southwestern Health System as well as the Department of Radiation Oncology within UT Southwestern Medical Center. As such, the AVP has a dual reporting relationship to the Chair of Radiation Oncology and the Health System Chief Operating Officer (COO). Additionally, this position will serve as the Departmental Administrator for the department and have a dotted line to Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Medical Group and Academic Affairs. In partnership with departmental, cancer center, and health system leadership, the AVP is responsible for operational, financial, and administrative leadership of one of the nation's busiest and premier academic radiation oncology programs in the US. Currently, radiation oncology services at UTSW employ over 600 faculty/staff/trainees. As the principal administrative partner to the Department Chair, the AVP is accountable for aligning the academic, research, educational, and clinical missions of Radiation Oncology while ensuring exceptional performance in quality, patient experience, access, growth, operational excellence, workforce engagement, and financial stewardship. Additionally, the AVP serves as a key leader within the Oncology Service Line leadership structure and partners with the Cancer Center, physician, and health system leaders to advance coordinated oncology operations, strategic growth, innovative program development, patient access, and service line performance across the continuum of cancer care.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required
  • Education

  • Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Public Health, Health Management, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience

  • 8 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in healthcare administration, academic medicine, cancer services, or a related healthcare environment.

JOB DUTIES
  • LEADERSHIP
    • Partner with the Department Chair, Health System leadership, Cancer Center leadership, and faculty leaders to establish organizational priorities, growth initiatives, and long-term business strategies.
    • Identify opportunities to expand clinical programs, improve patient access, enhance regional outreach, and strengthen market position.
    • Lead implementation of major organizational initiatives, including new programs, facilities/satellites, technology deployments, partnerships, and service expansions.
    • Represent Radiation Oncology in health system, academic, and external leadership forums.
    • Serve as the primary administrative advisor to the Chair of Radiation Oncology on departmental, service line, and enterprise priorities.
    • Facilitate alignment of departmental objectives with health system initiatives and institutional goals.
    • Recruit, develop, mentor, and retain high-performing administrative leaders and staff.
    • Assist the Chair of Radiation Oncology with both clinical and research faculty recruitment and on-boarding.
    • Oversee, along with the Chair of Radiation Oncology, research strategic planning and grants management particularly related to finances.
    • Administratively enable the Departmental educational missions, along with the Chair of Radiation Oncology, including several formal training programs, out-reach courses and symposia both for faculty and staff.
    • Promote a culture consistent with UT Southwestern's values of excellence, integrity, teamwork, innovation, and service.
    • Advance workforce engagement, leadership development, succession planning, and organizational effectiveness.
    • Foster strong partnerships among faculty, clinical leaders, researchers, trainees, and institutional stakeholders.
  • OPERATIONS
    • Provide executive oversight of all Radiation Oncology clinical operations across ambulatory, hospital-based, and partner locations.
    • Ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, efficient, patient-centered care through standardized operational practices and performance management.
    • Partner with physician, nursing, physics, dosimetry, therapy, and operational leaders to optimize clinical workflows, throughput, capacity management, and resource utilization.
    • Lead efforts to improve patient access, scheduling efficiency, care coordination, and service excellence.
    • Establish operational performance metrics and accountability structures to drive continuous improvement.
    • Direct operational planning and execution for new clinical programs, service expansions, and network growth initiatives.
  • ADMINISTRATION
    • Direct all administrative functions supporting the Department of Radiation Oncology.
    • Provide leadership and oversight for departmental administration, human resources, faculty support, business operations, compliance, and organizational development.
    • Provide leadership and support, in partnership with the Chair of Radiation Oncology, for effective strategic planning and execution of priorities.
    • Ensure effective coordination and integration among departmental, cancer center, and health system administrative functions.
    • Develop organizational structures, governance processes, and management systems that support departmental and service line goals.
    • Support faculty recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts in partnership with departmental leadership.
  • FINANCE
    • Provide executive oversight for departmental and service line financial performance, including operating budgets, capital planning, forecasting, and resource allocation.
    • Develop and execute financial strategies that support growth, sustainability, and mission advancement.
    • Monitor key financial indicators, identify opportunities for operational improvement, and implement actions to enhance performance.
    • Lead business planning and financial analyses for new programs, facilities, technologies, and strategic investments.
    • Ensure appropriate stewardship of institutional resources.
    • Develop and monitor business plans, productivity measures, and financial performance metrics that support organizational objectives.
  • ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
    • Support the Department Chair in advancing the department's academic, research, and educational missions.
    • Oversee administrative infrastructure supporting research programs, clinical trials, grants management, laboratories and cores, promotion and tenure applications, and faculty initiatives.
    • Collaborate with institutional leaders to enhance research growth, faculty recruitment, and academic productivity.
    • Support educational programs involving residents, fellows, students, and other trainees.
    • Facilitate alignment between academic priorities and operational capabilities.
    • Partner with institutional and departmental leaders to strengthen the national reputation and academic standing of the department.
    • Support the Departmentโ€ฟs unique companion animal (community owned dogs and cats) cancer treatment research facility (Veterinary Research Oncology Clinic, VROC) designed to help the animals afflicted with spontaneous cancers while collecting translational specimens informing human treatments.
  • QUALITY & COMPLIANCE
    • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, billing, reimbursement, radiation safety, and institutional requirements.
    • Partner with quality and clinical leadership to advance performance in patient safety, quality outcomes, and accreditation readiness.
