ROLE:             Compensation Specialist - 6 months Contract

REPORT TO:  Director, Total Rewards

LOCATION:     Hybrid, Corporate Office in Houston, TX

The Opportunity

The Compensation Specialist partners with the Director, Total Rewards, to design, implement, and administer the company’s compensation programs across a portfolio of multifamily real estate properties and corporate operations. This role ensures compensation structures are competitive, equitable, and aligned with the company’s strategic objectives — attracting and retaining top talent across property management, development, construction, and corporate functions. The Compensation Specialist serves as a subject matter expert on all matters related to base pay, incentive compensation, and pay equity, partnering closely with HR Business Partners, Finance, and senior leadership.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Director, Total Rewards, to develop and maintain the company’s compensation philosophy, structures, and policies, ensuring alignment with business strategy and market competitiveness
  • Support the annual compensation planning cycle including merit increases, promotions, market adjustments, as well as the administration of quarterly on-site performance bonuses, annual incentive payouts, and leasing commissions.
  • Conduct and participate in salary surveys, performing market pricing and benchmarking analyses for roles spanning corporate, property operations, maintenance, construction, and development functions
  • Support the design and maintenance of the company’s job architecture framework, including job leveling, titling conventions, FLSA classifications, and salary grade structures
  • Prepare and present compensation analytics, dashboards, and recommendations to senior leadership, translating data into actionable insights
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to develop competitive offer strategies and ensure internal equity when onboarding new hires
  • Conduct pay equity analyses and support compliance with federal, state, and local compensation-related regulations, including pay transparency laws across applicable jurisdictions
  • Advise HR Business Partners and hiring managers on compensation decisions, policy interpretation, and exception requests
  • Support the Director, Total Rewards on executive compensation matters, senior-level reporting, and special projects as needed
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing compensation programs through cost modeling, turnover analysis, and ROI assessments, recommending enhancements where appropriate
  • Stay current on compensation trends in the multifamily and real estate investment industry, including regional labor market dynamics affecting property-level staffing
  • Assist with the implementation of a new human capital management system, ensuring compensation data structures, workflows, and reporting requirements are accurately configured.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field required; Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) designation preferred.
  • Five to seven years of progressive compensation experience, with at least two years managing broad-based compensation programs; experience in multifamily real estate, property management, or a similarly distributed, multi-site workforce environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with compensation survey tools and market pricing platforms such as Payscale, Radford, Mercer, or WTW
  • Advanced Excel and analytical skills required; working knowledge of Power BI preferred; experience with HRIS platforms such as Workday or ADP preferred
  • Experience participating in or leading an HCM system implementation preferred
  • Strong understanding of FLSA, pay equity legislation, and compensation-related regulatory requirements
