What is a radar system?

Radar systems are electronic devices that use radio waves to detect, locate, and track objects such as aircraft, ships, vehicles, or weather formations. They work by transmitting radio signals and analyzing the echoes that bounce back from objects in their path. Radar systems are widely used in fields like aviation, maritime navigation, meteorology, and defense to enhance safety, security, and situational awareness. Their ability to operate in various weather conditions makes them essential for both civilian and military applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a radar system engineer?

To thrive as a Radar System Engineer, you need expertise in electronics, signal processing, and radar theory, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with tools like MATLAB, simulation software, and industry-standard design and testing equipment is typical, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP). Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the development, maintenance, and optimization of reliable radar systems critical for defense, aerospace, and communication industries.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in radar system roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in Radar System roles often face challenges such as integrating new technology with legacy systems, managing electromagnetic interference, and ensuring system reliability in diverse environments. Successfully addressing these challenges typically requires strong problem-solving skills, ongoing collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, and staying updated on the latest industry standards and regulations. Regular training, cross-functional communication, and proactive maintenance planning are effective ways to overcome these obstacles and ensure optimal system performance.

What is the difference between Radar System vs Radar Technician?

AspectRadar SystemRadar Technician
CredentialsEngineering degrees, certifications in radar technologyTechnical certifications, training in radar maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing environmentsField and maintenance settings
Industry UsageDefense, aerospace, maritime, weather forecastingMilitary, aerospace, industrial sectors

Radar System refers to the technology and design of radar devices, often requiring engineering expertise. Radar Technician focuses on maintaining, repairing, and operating radar equipment. While Radar System involves development and design, Radar Technician handles hands-on technical support. Both roles are essential in radar operations but differ in scope and responsibilities.

How to become a radar system technician?

To become a radar system technician, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by postsecondary training in electronics or telecommunications. Many technicians gain skills through technical schools, community colleges, or military training, and certifications such as CompTIA A+ or specialized radar system certifications can enhance job prospects. Hands-on experience with electronic equipment and knowledge of radar technology are essential for this role.

Job description

We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. Automated aviation systems will enable a future where air transportation is safer, more convenient and fundamentally transformative to the way goods - and eventually people - move around the planet. We are a team of mission-driven engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.

As a Sr. FPGA Design Engineer at Reliable Robotics you will be a part of the FPGA team which owns the firmware at the heart of the Reliable Robotics phased array radar. Phased array radar systems have historically been reserved for specialized applications, but we're making this technology affordable to enable Detect and Avoid for widespread commercial applications. This role will focus on new advanced operational modes. The passion for revolutionary technology to make aviation safer motivates us to come in every day.

Responsibilities

In your role as a Sr. FPGA Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the FPGA design including product architecture, implementation, synthesis, hardware integration, and testing for our Air to Air Radar solution. You will coordinate with the avionics and radar teams to establish high-level FPGA requirements as well as hardware/software interfaces. You will be responsible for translating MATLAB algorithms to fixed point VHDL implementations, conducting system architecture performance tradeoffs, and verifying real-time performance. You will work in a collaborative development environment including mutual peer review to maintain high product quality.

Basic Success Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent

  • 8+ years of full-cycle electronics hardware development experience in a professional environment

  • Professional experience designing FPGA digital logic using industry-standard design, simulation, and synthesis tools

Preferred Criteria

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent

  • Experience working with RADAR or RF transceivers

  • Proven track record of product ownership including development and field support

  • Experience with safety-critical FPGA development (DO-254 level A/B or equivalent industry standard)

  • Experience architecting, implementing, and verifying fixed point DSP algorithms

  • Comfortable with a fast-paced, agile/iterative development life cycle

  • Pragmatic, results-oriented work style

FPGA designers at Reliable Robotics have a unique opportunity to work within a vertically integrated technology stack that extends up to the aircraft level, with a direct impact on the aircraft's capabilities and requirements.
