How much do radar signal processing machine learning jobs pay per year?

As of May 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for radar signal processing machine learning in the United States is $131,250.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $125,000.00 and $142,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Radar Signal Processing Machine Learning Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Radar Signal Processing Machine Learning Engineer, a strong background in electrical engineering, signal processing, and applied machine learning is essential, usually supported by a relevant degree such as an MS or PhD. Proficiency with tools like MATLAB, Python, TensorFlow or PyTorch, and radar simulation software is typically required, along with experience in algorithm development and data analysis. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills to excel in this interdisciplinary field. These competencies enable accurate development and deployment of intelligent radar systems, which are vital for applications in defense, automotive, and remote sensing.

What are some common challenges faced when applying machine learning techniques to radar signal processing, and how can a new team member prepare for them?

A common challenge in this role is dealing with the complexity and variability of real-world radar data, which often includes noise, clutter, and limited labeled examples for training machine learning models. New team members can prepare by developing strong signal processing fundamentals, gaining familiarity with radar datasets, and learning best practices for data preprocessing and augmentation. Collaboration with domain experts and regular code reviews are also integral to overcoming challenges, as the team typically includes both radar engineers and data scientists working closely to refine models and interpret outcomes.

What is radar signal processing in machine learning?

Radar signal processing in machine learning involves using advanced algorithms to analyze and interpret radar data. Machine learning techniques are applied to improve target detection, classification, and tracking by learning from patterns in the radar signals. This approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of radar systems in applications such as autonomous vehicles, surveillance, and weather monitoring. By leveraging large datasets, machine learning can adapt to changing environments and reduce false alarms, making radar systems smarter and more reliable.

What is the difference between Radar Signal Processing Machine Learning vs Radar Systems Engineer?

AspectRadar Signal Processing Machine LearningRadar Systems Engineer
Required CredentialsDegree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related; knowledge of signal processing and machine learningDegree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related; expertise in radar system design
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, defense contractors focusing on algorithm developmentDesign, develop, and test radar systems in engineering teams, often in defense or aerospace industries
Industry UsageDeveloping algorithms for radar data analysis using machine learning techniquesCreating and integrating radar hardware and software systems for operational use

While Radar Signal Processing Machine Learning focuses on applying machine learning techniques to analyze radar data, Radar Systems Engineers design and develop the entire radar systems. Both roles require a strong background in electrical engineering and often collaborate in defense and aerospace sectors, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Who We Are:
Ongoing threats to national security require timely intelligence data, including signal intelligence obtained through electronic surveillance. Since the 1940s, SwRI has supported U.S. and friendly foreign governments, as well as commercial clients. While a non-profit research institution, SwRI develops state of the art solutions to real problems.
Objectives of this Role:
  • Work with multidisciplinary team of engineers, software developers, and technicians in the execution of R&D, design, and testing systems and software in support of national security.
  • Design, develop, integrate, test and deploy new signal processing capabilities in the areas of energy detection, channelization, signal recognition, signal demodulation/decoding & encoding/modulating, RF geolocation and electronic warfare.
  • Simulate and develop radar signal processing algorithms for blind radar detection and parameterization in a complex propagation and environment (HF ionospheric propagation channels).
  • Simulate HF propagation using advanced tools for predicting signal effects due to multi-path and scattering to evaluate algorithm performance with realistic data.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with client technical representatives and SwRI senior engineering and software staff to develop algorithms and write software and scripts for signal processing applications and to test software and related systems.
  • Work at SwRI laboratories and support short-term travel to government facilities/military bases or other customer facilities for system installations and to provide technical support within and outside the United States.
  • Present progress and findings to your project teams and clients.
  • Prepare technical documents and support proposal preparation as required.

Requirements:
  • Requires a Masters or a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • 3-7 years: Applicants with PhD qualify with 3 years and those with a Masters qualify with 7 years work experience in signal processing with understanding of radar system concepts and waveforms. Experience with C/C++ and Python are required.
  • Over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) or ionospheric sounder processing experience desired.
  • Communications signal processing desired. Linux and MATLAB proficiency are desired.
  • Coursework and/or research experience with application of machine learning to signal processing is strongly desired.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Special Requirements:
Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
