Job description

Corman Switching Company! We are seeking a dynamic Train Crew Member in Jesup, GA. If you are ambitious, physically capable, and dependable, apply now!

Accountability: Performs engine operation, on-ground duties, equipment maintenance, and other assigned duties to assist in an efficient switching operation. Expected to progress in skill and responsibilities of train operations over time.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in all phases of the safe, daily operation of trains.
  • Operates equipment according to company policies, procedures and practices in all areas, including equipment usage and maintenance, safety (OSHA), and DOT requirements.
  • Operates track switches, couples cars, and works on freight trains, in yard operations and on the road.
  • Moves and aligns various parts of rail equipment to create or build trains.
  • Reviews instructions from Operations Manager, dispatchers, and yardmasters, and discusses with train crew
  • Multi-tasking - must be able to perform several tasks safely that will require pulling, controlling, and maneuvering onto and off of equipment.
  • Works with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
  • Increasing responsibilities expected and required, including the ability to handle locomotive engineering duties upon training eligibility.
  • Train Crew Members are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per DOT requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Specialized Knowledge, Education, Experience:

  • Previous railroad or industrial switching experience preferred, but not required
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
  • Ability to operate a range of vehicles and machinery in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Overall willingness to learn new skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to perform physical, strenuous work in all weather conditions
  • Requires constant standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and balancing in a safe manner, and walking on uneven surfaces such as ballast.
  • Requires frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 lbs
  • Able to push and pull with up to 150 lbs of force to throw a switch

Job Dimensions: Must be able to perform duties under direct supervision, when given general direction with limited discretion. This position does not require supervision of fellow employees.
