Material Coordinator - R amp;M Division
Job Summary:
The Internal Material Handler is responsible for coordinating and transporting material, job travelers, tooling, and work-in-process (WIP) throughout the manufacturing and repair facility. This role ensures jobs are staged at the appropriate work centers, prioritized according to production requirements, and moved efficiently between machines and buildings to support on-time delivery and maximum equipment utilization. The Internal Material Handler serves as a key link between production planning, machining, repair operations, quality, and shipping by maintaining continuous workflow, minimizing machine downtime, and ensuring priority jobs are available when and where they are needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Transport materials, components, tooling, and work-in-process throughout the facility and between campus buildings.
  • Monitor job status and proactively move jobs to the next operation to prevent production delays.
  • Stage priority jobs at designated machines according to production schedules and supervisor direction.
  • Coordinate with production supervisors, planners, machinists, and quality personnel to maintain efficient workflow.
  • Identify and escalate bottlenecks, material shortages, missing paperwork, or delays impacting production.
  • Maintain organization of WIP storage areas, machine staging areas, and material flow routes.
  • Verify travelers, routing documentation, and job identification accompany work throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Ensure completed operations are promptly delivered to inspection, subsequent machining operations, assembly, or shipping.
  • Support inventory accuracy through proper tracking and movement of materials.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, cranes, and other material handling equipment as required.
  • Assist with receiving, stocking, packaging, and shipping activities as workload demands.
  • Maintain safe material handling practices and compliance with company safety procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts focused on shop flow, throughput, and operational efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous manufacturing, machine shop, warehouse, or industrial experience preferred.
  • Ability to read job travelers, work orders, routing sheets, and production schedules.
  • Basic computer skills for production tracking and job status updates.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment or obtain certification.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and perform routine physical work.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in a machine shop, repair facility, compressor service shop, or heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems, such as M1 or similar manufacturing software.
  • Knowledge of machining processes, repair operations, and manufacturing workflow.
Success Profile:
A successful Internal Material Handler is constantly aware of where every priority job is located, what operation it needs next, and what machine should be running it. They proactively eliminate delays, keep work flowing through the shop, and help maximize productive spindle time across the facility. This role directly impacts throughput, machine utilization, lead time reduction, and on-time customer delivery.
Working Conditions amp; Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling while moving material throughout the facility.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and perform routine physical work.
  • Exposure to manufacturing, repair, warehouse, and shop environments, including moving equipment, machinery, noise, and material handling traffic.
  • Use of required PPE, including eye protection, safety shoes, hearing protection, and any other PPE required by company policy.
  • Must be able to safely operate or become certified to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, cranes, and other material handling equipment.
