It is often worth it for businesses seeking accurate records, especially when preparing for audits or tax filing, and may require familiarity with accounting principles and QuickBooks tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in QuickBooks Cleanup, and why are they important?

To excel at QuickBooks Cleanup, you need strong bookkeeping fundamentals, attention to detail, and familiarity with accounting principles, often supported by experience or certification in QuickBooks. Mastery of QuickBooks Online or Desktop, along with knowledge of standard accounting software and reconciliations, is essential. Excellent problem-solving, organizational skills, and the ability to communicate clearly with clients set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate financial records, regulatory compliance, and clear financial insights for business decision-making.

How much to charge for QuickBooks cleanup?

QuickBooks cleanup professionals typically charge between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on the complexity of the work and the experience level. Quickbooks Cleanup focuses on correcting and organizing existing Quickbooks files, often as a short-term project. What is QuickBooks cleanup?

QuickBooks cleanup is the process of reviewing, organizing, and correcting errors in a QuickBooks account to ensure financial data is accurate and up-to-date. This task often involves reconciling bank statements, fixing miscategorized transactions, removing duplicates, and updating account balances. QuickBooks cleanup is essential for businesses to maintain accurate records, prepare for taxes, and make informed financial decisions.

What are some common challenges faced during a QuickBooks cleanup project, and how can I prepare for them?

QuickBooks cleanup projects often involve sorting through disorganized or inaccurate financial data, addressing duplicate or missing transactions, and reconciling accounts that haven’t been balanced in months or even years. Job seekers should be prepared for investigative work, attention to detail, and frequent communication with clients or team members to clarify unclear transactions. Being familiar with common QuickBooks reports and having a systematic approach to data validation will help streamline the process. Patience and a proactive mindset are key, as you may need to educate clients on best practices to prevent future issues.

What are people replacing QuickBooks with?

Many accounting professionals and small business owners replace QuickBooks with cloud-based alternatives like Xero, Wave, or FreshBooks, which offer similar features with different user interfaces and pricing models. Some also switch to enterprise solutions such as Sage or NetSuite for larger organizations or more complex needs. The choice depends on the specific accounting requirements, budget, and familiarity with the software tools.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

QuickBooks cleanup specialists and other bookkeepers perform tasks that involve data entry, reconciliation, and financial record organization. While AI tools can automate some repetitive tasks, human oversight is still essential for accuracy, interpretation, and complex financial analysis, making AI a complement rather than a replacement for bookkeepers.

Backyard Bookkeeper is looking for new senior bookkeepers to join our team. As a member of our accounting team, you will be keeping the books (data entry, reconciliation, review, financial statements) for a handful of regular clients, taking responsibility for enterprise clients with more complex financial reporting, as well as helping with incoming large projects that require cleanup or setup before we can transition them to "maintenance mode" bookkeeping.

  • Type at least 50 WPM, not afraid of data entry (sometimes it gets tedious, but we do our best to mix it up with more interesting work).
  • Generally tech savvy on computers, Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet; able to learn new software quickly.

Additional Information/Benefits:
  • Flexible hours
  • On the job training and development
  • Work from the comfort of your own home
  • Interact with lots of interesting people and companies in varying industries
  • Have a variety of ongoing projects, rather than keeping the same routine every day and week
  • Mileage and home office expense reimbursements
  • Company IRA matching up to 3%
  • Each team has an in-person meeting (usually lunch or dinner) once a quarter - attendance is required in most cases
  • We hold two events each year in the SLC, Utah area: a company retreat in the fall and a holiday party in early December. Attendance is required at both events if you live within reasonable traveling distance (mileage is reimbursed). If not, the company will pay for a plane ticket to at least one of the semiannual get-togethers.
  • We currently have an office location in Sandy, Utah. You are welcome to take advantage of the office space if you prefer to work outside of your home office some of the time.

***One last note: we have an intensive, careful hiring process because we are dedicated to choosing the best qualified candidates who will work well within our company culture and provide excellent service to our clients. Please be prepared to have as many as five interviews before we make any final decision, and the whole process may take several weeks.
