Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Quarry Supervisor, the Excavator Operator is responsible for safe operation of the Excavator to support daily mining operations. This role focuses on excavation, material handling, face management, and loading support while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, production efficiency, and equipment care.
New Hire Orientation & Safety Training are held only ONCE a month, in the San Antonio, TX office. Be prepared for travel and overnight accommodation up to 1-3 days. . Accommodations & reimbursements are covered by Martin Marietta for anyone traveling more than 50 miles.
Key Responsibilities
  • Operate excavators to remove overburden, extract raw materials, clearing waterways and maintain working faces.
  • Load haul trucks, feed crushers, and move materials efficiently throughout the quarry
  • Perform pre-operational inspections and routine maintenance on equipment
  • Monitor excavation areas to ensure proper benching, slope stability, and safe digging practices
  • Follow production plans and communicate with supervisors and haul truck operators to optimize material flow
  • Maintain housekeeping in work areas and keep equipment clean and operational
  • Identify and report mechanical issues or unsafe conditions promptly
  • Assist with plant, pit, or site cleanup and other production tasks as needed
  • Support other equipment operations when required (e.g., loaders, dozers)
  • Adhere to all safety policies, environmental regulations, and MSHA guidelines
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 1+ years of experience operating excavators in a mining, quarry, or heavy construction environment
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify equipment issues
  • Ability to read and understand safety procedures and operational instructions
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must be able to work 12 hour shifts, possible weekends, overtime, and holidays as needed.
  • Must be able to read equipment operating manual
  • Must be able to complete pre-shift inspection report
  • Must be able to communicate over CB radio or with hand signals and warning sounds, with coworkers regarding movement of vehicles and mobile equipment
  • Possess basic mathematical aptitude to complete daily reports
  • Must be able to wear all required safety equipment
  • Must be able to perform duties in a safe manner
  • Must be able to read and interpret gauges
  • Must be service oriented with proven ability to work in a TEAM environment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have good hand/eye coordination and be able to operate hand/foot controls
  • Possess good vision to perceive depth at close range and distances up to 150 feet
  • Must be able to climb on and off equipment to operate and service
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel in limited space in cab of vehicle
  • Must be able to sit and operate equipment for long periods up to 10+ hours per day
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs
  • Must work outside in all weather conditions consistent with extreme ambient temperatures: heat, cold, wetness, dryness, dust, and noisy conditions
  • Must be able to work at various heights
WORKING CONDITIONS
Larger equipment is typically air conditioned. There will be times when outside assignments may require periods of work in all weather conditions-heat, cold, wet or dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.
