What is quantum science solutions?

Quantum Science Solutions refers to the application of quantum theory and quantum technologies to solve complex problems in fields such as computing, communication, sensing, and cryptography. Professionals in this area work on developing and implementing quantum algorithms, building quantum hardware, and creating innovative solutions that leverage quantum mechanics' unique properties. These solutions have the potential to revolutionize industries by enabling faster computations, ultra-secure communications, and highly sensitive measurements. The field is multidisciplinary, involving physics, computer science, engineering, and mathematics.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work in quantum science solutions?

To thrive in Quantum Science Solutions, you need a solid background in quantum mechanics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by an advanced degree (MSc or PhD) in physics, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), simulation platforms, and familiarity with quantum hardware are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help professionals collaborate and convey complex concepts. These skills are crucial for developing innovative quantum technologies and bridging the gap between theoretical research and practical applications.

What are common challenges faced by professionals in quantum science solutions, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Quantum Science Solutions often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving technology, the interdisciplinary nature of the work, and the need for collaboration across diverse fields like physics, computer science, and engineering. Staying up-to-date with the latest research and developments is crucial, so ongoing learning and professional development are highly encouraged. Effective communication and teamwork skills are also essential, as projects typically involve working closely with experts from various backgrounds to solve complex problems and develop innovative solutions.

Job description

Berkeley Lab's Applied Mathematics Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an immediate opening in the Quantum Information Science and Technology Group (QuIST) for a Quantum Experimentalist Postdoctoral Fellow under the programs of Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) and Quantum System Accelerator (QSA). This position will focus on design, calibration, and operation of mid-scale digital superconducting quantum processors. These processors will implement several novel capabilities geared toward efficiency and high fidelity. Ultimately, they will be used for cutting-edge demonstrations of quantum computing applications.

You will:

  • Design and test novel superconducting device components compatible with extensible quantum processors

  • Analytical and numerical modelling of microwave quantum circuits and signals

  • Design and conduct state-of-the-art experiments using superconducting quantum processors for quantum information science.

  • Develop scalable calibration methodologies for quantum operations

  • Troubleshoot noise processes on quantum hardware and design and implement mitigation strategies.

  • Validate, analyze, and interpret experimental data.

  • Firmware development & programming tools to interface with FPGA-based electronics.

  • Quantum verification and validation.

  • Mentorship of and collaboration with student researchers

We are looking for:

  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Experience independently planning and completing projects.

  • Relevant publication record and demonstration of proficient written and verbal presentation of scientific results.

  • Knowledge of quantum information science related to one or more of the responsibilities/research areas listed above.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team that includes engineers, scientific staff, technicians, and students.

  • Ability to direct the work of technical support staff or students.

  • Experience using Python based programming tools.

Desired skills/knowledge:

  • Ability to prepare periodic updates (written and oral) for internal and external reviews or reports. This includes experience in evaluating scientific narrative, skill in technical writing, and using presentation preparation tools.

  • Experience operating and maintaining a dilution refrigerator.

We're here for the same mission, to bring science solutions to the world. Join our team and YOU will play a supporting role in our goal to address global challenges! Have a high level of impact and work for an organization associated with 17 Nobel Prizes!

Why join Berkeley Lab?

We invest in our employees by offering a total rewards package you can count on:
