Next-gen optical hardware for Space/Earth Observation and Advanced Manufacturing.

Backed by VCs, Government Agencies and top Universities.

Equity options in a brand-new startup as a founding team member!

We’ve teamed up with a next-gen optical hardware startup, who are revolutionizing AI imaging with intelligent vision developed through breakthrough quantum technology. Backed by VC, DARPA, NASA and founded through MIT & Harvard research, they provide the world’s highest resolution imaging system, capable of seeing 20x further than any camera in known existence.

Having launched earlier this year, they’re looking for a Lead Research Scientist to build a first-of-its-kind hardware prototype that will be shot into Low Earth Orbit. They’re building their hub near Cambridge (MA), with this position likely to evolve into a senior technical leadership role as the business scales up.

Please note that this position can only support US Green Card holders, and cannot offer sponsorship.

Responsibilities

As their first algorithms hire, you will require an extensive background in quantum optics and information theory. Working closely with the CTO and eventual optical engineering team, you’ll build simulations and algorithms to optimize the imaging & sensing systems for their initial prototype. This involves calculating fundamental quantum limits of various imaging/sensing scenarios, building & testing models, conducting simulations and developing/optimizing algorithms to ensure a functional prototype. You’ll develop ML and statistical tooling for object classification, state detection or parameter estimation, as well as developing algorithms to extract data from photons. Whilst the initial project is focused on Space/Earth observation, long-term, they will expand into areas like robotics and advanced manufacturing, so adaptability and pace is key.

Qualifications
  • PhD (or Masters with industry experience) in Physics, Electrical/Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or similar, with a focus on quantum optics and/or quantum information theory.
  • 5+ years of experience in the research of Quantum Optics or Quantum Information Theory.
  • Strong proficiency in programming languages for simulations (Python, MATLAB, R).
  • Deep understanding of quantum optics concepts (photon statistics, entanglement, interferometry).
  • Deep understanding of information theory and communication protocols.
  • Experience developing and implementing numerical algorithms.
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience with optical neural networks modeling and simulation.
  • Experience with optical hardware and experimental work.
  • Experience in Defense and/or Space technologies.
Benefits

On top of a competitive salary in line with your experience (+ equity), the business offers a matched 401(k), medical, dental and vision coverage from day one, private health insurance, as well as generous PTO. They have a mature approach to flexible working, supporting personal circumstances where possible, and also offer fantastic equity options, as an early-stage member of the team and technical leader for their first functional prototype.

Not only that, but you’ll be a part of truly transformative technology for the Defense and Space industries!
