How much do quantum machine learning jobs pay per year?
What is a quantum machine learning?
A Quantum Machine Learning (QML) job involves applying principles of quantum computing to machine learning tasks. Professionals in this field develop algorithms that leverage quantum systems to improve computational efficiency and solve complex problems faster than classical methods. Responsibilities often include researching quantum algorithms, implementing quantum circuits, and working with tools like Qiskit or TensorFlow Quantum. These roles are typically found in research labs, tech companies, and startups exploring the intersection of AI and quantum technology. Strong backgrounds in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, and computer science are essential.
What does a quantum machine learning professional do?
Quantum Machine Learning professionals often work on exploratory projects at the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence, such as developing new algorithms that leverage quantum hardware for faster data processing or optimizing classical ML models using quantum techniques. Daily tasks may include designing experiments, simulating quantum systems, analyzing results, and collaborating with physicists and software engineers. The work can range from foundational research to applied development, depending on the organization's focus. These roles frequently involve teamwork and staying updated on emerging academic and industry advances to ensure innovative problem-solving approaches.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in quantum machine learning?
To thrive in Quantum Machine Learning, you need a solid background in quantum physics, machine learning, linear algebra, and programming—often supported by a graduate degree in a related field. Familiarity with quantum computing frameworks such as Qiskit or Cirq, and experience with conventional ML libraries like TensorFlow or PyTorch are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help professionals stand out. Mastery of these skills and qualities is essential for tackling complex interdisciplinary challenges and driving innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

What you'll be doing
As a Quantum Machine Learning Research Scientist, you will play a key individual contributor role within CIBC's Advanced Analytics and AI team, driving the development and application of quantum computing capabilities across the bank. You will lead applied research initiatives focused on designing, executing, and evaluating quantum algorithms, working closely with researchers, engineers, and business stakeholders to explore real-world use cases in areas such as fraud, cybersecurity, and optimization. You will contribute to advancing quantum research while translating complex concepts into practical insights, helping shape how emerging technologies can be leveraged within a banking environment. This role requires a strong balance of technical depth, hands-on experimentation, and the ability to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview.
How you'll succeed
- Applied Research & Experimentation - Design, implement, and execute quantum computing experiments and proof-of-concepts, translating theoretical research into practical, testable outcomes aligned to business needs.
- Quantum Expertise - Apply deep knowledge of quantum computing principles and algorithms to solve complex computational problems, with a focus on real-world applicability within financial services.
- Collaboration & Influence - Work closely with AI researchers, machine learning engineers, developers, and domain experts across business units (e.g., fraud, cybersecurity) to co-develop and evaluate innovative solutions.
- Communication & Translation - Clearly articulate complex quantum concepts and research findings to a broad audience, including senior leadership, enabling informed decision-making.
- Innovation Mindset - Stay current with advancements in quantum computing and contribute to original research while identifying opportunities to apply emerging capabilities within the organization.
Who you are
- You can demonstrate knowledge and experience in. quantum computing. You bring strong expertise in quantum computing concepts, algorithms, and programming frameworks, with hands-on experience in designing and executing experiments. You have experience translating theoretical research into practical experimentation or real-world applications, ideally within industry or applied research settings. You are proficient in programming and comfortable working with tools and frameworks such as Python, Qiskit, Cirq, Ocean, or Q#, and can collaborate effectively with engineering teams to execute experiments. You understand machine learning concepts and have a working knowledge of machine learning principles and can articulate how they intersect with quantum computing.
- You have a PhD in. physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on quantum computing or closely related disciplines.
- Your influence makes a difference. You are able to translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise insights for non-technical stakeholders, including senior leaders. You're motivated by collective success.
- You love to learn. You thrive in a research-driven environment, are open to learning across domains, and are motivated to explore how emerging technologies can create business value.
- Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
