What is a quantum electrical engineer?

Quantum Electrical Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test electronic systems and devices that operate based on quantum mechanical principles. They work on technologies such as quantum computers, quantum sensors, and quantum communication systems, integrating quantum theory with electrical engineering. Their work often involves research and development in both hardware and software to advance emerging quantum technologies.

What is the difference between Quantum Electrical Engineer vs Quantum Hardware Engineer?

AspectQuantum Electrical EngineerQuantum Hardware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields; knowledge of quantum electronicsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields; focus on hardware design
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, industry R&DLaboratories, manufacturing facilities, research institutions
Employer & Industry UsageQuantum computing companies, tech firms, research institutionsQuantum hardware startups, research labs, semiconductor companies

Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and work in related environments, but Quantum Electrical Engineers focus more on electronic components and circuit design for quantum systems, while Quantum Hardware Engineers concentrate on building and testing quantum devices and hardware components.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quantum electrical engineer?

To thrive as a Quantum Electrical Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, quantum mechanics, and advanced mathematics, typically supported by a relevant degree such as a master's or PhD. Experience with quantum simulation software, cryogenic systems, and laboratory instrumentation, along with familiarity with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and strong teamwork and communication skills help professionals excel in this multidisciplinary field. These competencies are crucial for advancing quantum technology research and development, ensuring innovation and practical implementation in this cutting-edge industry.

How does a quantum electrical engineer typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on quantum technology projects?

Quantum Electrical Engineers frequently work alongside physicists, software engineers, and materials scientists to design and optimize quantum devices and systems. Collaboration is key, as these engineers integrate electrical engineering principles with quantum mechanics, ensuring that hardware meets the stringent requirements for quantum coherence and signal integrity. Regular team meetings, joint troubleshooting sessions, and cross-functional project planning are common, enabling efficient progress from initial design through to experimental validation and scaling. Such teamwork helps bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical, scalable quantum technology.

Job description

Join our fast-paced and passionate team as a Principal Electrical Engineer (Level 5). In this role, you will shape the technical direction of our electrical and RF systems as we scale. You'll make major architectural decisions, guide engineering practices, and drive execution across multidisciplinary teams. This position is ideal for a highly experienced engineer who thrives in ambiguity, leads with initiative, and elevates the technical bar for the entire organization.
You will collaborate closely with leadership, influence product strategy, and mentor engineers across the team. Your work will directly impact our roadmap, reliability, and long-term scalability.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership across electrical and RF design efforts, setting design standards, methodologies, and review practices.
  • Lead complex engineering programs from concept through production, including requirements definition, architecture development, risk assessment, and cross-functional alignment.
  • Drive system-level decision-making, ensuring designs meet performance, manufacturability, reliability, and compliance requirements.
  • Conduct and lead peer reviews, ensuring rigor in analysis, documentation, and verification.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion best practices in schedule management, data integrity, communication clarity, and engineering discipline.
  • Identify opportunities for organizational and technical improvement, influencing long-term engineering strategy.

Requirements
Requirements
  • This position requires access to export-controlled information. Employment is contingent upon the applicant being a U.S. person as defined by 8 U.S.C. ยง 1324b(a)(3).

Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, ECE, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience, ideally including startup or high-growth environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing RF circuits in the 200 MHz to 20 GHz range.
  • Deep experience with low-noise analog design, high-performance signal chains, and RF system integration.
  • Proven track record designing RF PCBs with low loss, low crosstalk, and high signal integrity.
  • Experience with Altium Designer is a plus.

Skills:
  • Expert-level understanding of analog, mixed-signal, and RF circuit design principles.
  • Ability to architect complex electrical systems, select components, and define design requirements.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as SPICE for modeling and performance analysis.
  • Strong familiarity with vendor ecosystems and component selection strategies.
  • Deep knowledge of RF design concepts, PCB layout constraints, and best practices for high-frequency systems.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Own electrical system architecture and guide implementation across engineering teams.
  • Lead the design, development, analysis, documentation, and testing of products, systems, and subsystems.
