What is a Quantum Computing job?

A Quantum Computing job involves researching, developing, and applying quantum mechanics principles to create advanced computing systems. Professionals in this field work on algorithms, hardware, and software that leverage quantum bits (qubits) to solve complex problems faster than classical computers. Roles include quantum software engineer, quantum physicist, and research scientist, often requiring expertise in physics, mathematics, and computer science. These jobs are typically found in academia, tech companies, and government research labs focused on advancing quantum technology.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in quantum computing?

Professionals in quantum computing spend their days developing and testing quantum algorithms, collaborating with physicists and engineers on hardware advancements, and running experiments on quantum simulators or actual devices. They often work in interdisciplinary teams and engage in regular code reviews, technical discussions, and research collaborations. Keeping up with the latest scientific literature and participating in internal or external seminars is also common. This dynamic workflow ensures that team members stay informed about cutting-edge developments and continuously contribute to innovative projects.

What is the salary of a quantum engineer?

The salary of a quantum engineer typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in quantum algorithms or hardware may earn higher compensation. Entry-level positions generally start around $70,000 to $90,000.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Quantum Computing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in quantum computing, you typically need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by a graduate degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), quantum hardware platforms, and experience with simulation tools are frequently required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential for developing and implementing quantum algorithms, collaborating on interdisciplinary teams, and advancing this rapidly evolving field.

Is quantum computing as big as AI?

Quantum computing and AI are both rapidly advancing fields, but AI currently has a broader practical impact and market size. Quantum computing is still in early development stages, primarily used in research and specialized applications, requiring skills in quantum algorithms and programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq. Job opportunities for quantum computing roles are growing but are more niche compared to AI positions.

What careers are there in quantum computing?

Careers in quantum computing include roles such as quantum software engineers, quantum hardware engineers, research scientists, and quantum algorithm developers. These positions typically require knowledge of quantum mechanics, programming skills in languages like Python or Qiskit, and often a background in physics, computer science, or engineering. Opportunities exist in academia, industry, and government labs focused on developing quantum technologies and applications.

Is quantum computing a good career?

Quantum computing is a rapidly growing field with increasing demand for specialists in areas such as quantum algorithms, hardware development, and cryptography. Careers in this area typically require strong backgrounds in physics, computer science, or engineering, along with skills in programming languages like Python and familiarity with quantum programming frameworks. The field offers opportunities in research, academia, and industry, often involving advanced degrees and continuous learning to stay current with technological advancements.

The Project Engineer (PE) will be accountable for the on-time delivery of quantum computer hardware and functionality to meet program needs. This role is primarily responsible for planning, tracking, and coordinating system integration and validation activities across multiple units. To do so, the ideal candidate will bring technical depth in multiple subsystems and develop it at the system level such that they can ask good questions, spot risks early, and earn the trust of the engineering team.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage detailed schedules and weekly workflows for subsystem receipt, system integration, system verification & validation, and system delivery for a complex quantum computer product
  • Track and manage milestones to measure technical progress and risk
  • Track and deconflict staffing resources across multiple product realization phases and units
  • Perform day-to-day coordination of deliverables to/from other groups (such as Software, Mechanical, Electrical, Optical, etc.) on cross-functional teams
  • Support program-level Rolling Action Item Logs (RAIL), Risk registers, and other tracking tools to keep sight of tasks and organize activities
  • Coordinate with subsystem teams, program management, and support teams to get on-time delivery of needed hardware and technical resources
  • Support regular project reviews and status meetings to determine progress and address any questions or challenges regarding projects
  • Capture regular lessons learned from throughout the product realization process and collaborate with technical/programmatic leadership to inform future project cost/schedule estimates and process improvements
  • Up to 10% domestic travel to support internal meetings and coordinate with remote teams

YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Bachelor's degree minimum
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in milestone-driven technical program management or project engineering
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.

WE VALUE:
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an associated STEM field preferred
  • Experience delivering high-complexity, low-volume integrated hardware systems to external customers
  • Experience with atomic-physics-based or quantum information projects, including R&D, production, operations, and/or sustainment
  • Comfort applying project management practices to the ambiguity of deployable low-volume products and balancing competing priorities
  • Strong bias to action, attention to detail, and continuous improvement mindset
  • Experience interfacing with internal and external production/manufacturing resources
  • Strong familiarity with project management, development, and collaboration tools, including Confluence, Smartsheet, MS365 suite, JIRA, Slack, and Microsoft Project
