General Notes
This position will support the university's new School of Computing, which includes 3 strong departments and more than 6,500 students across all programs. This places UT among the most significant intellectual hubs for computer science, information, and statistics and data science research and education anywhere in the world. The School of Computing has a close relationship with Austin's thriving tech culture and works at the forefront of fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, and cybersecurity.
Purpose
The School of Computing Student Ambassador position is a leadership, outreach, and communications role for undergraduate students. Ambassadors serve as a primary face of the School of Computing and help connect the school with prospective students and families, alumni, industry visitors, and the UT Austin community.
Ambassadors share their student experiences, answer questions, lead tours, support recruitment and outreach events, and help tell the story of the School of Computing through social media and digital content. Ambassadors may create short-form videos, photos, interviews, and other content that provides an authentic look at academics, student life, research, student organizations, events, career opportunities, and the UT Austin experience.
This role is ideal for students who are welcoming, dependable, comfortable communicating with others, and excited to represent the School of Computing both in person and online.
Responsibilities
Student Engagement & Outreach
  • Lead guided tours of School of Computing buildings and facilities for prospective students, families, school groups, alumni, and special guests.
  • Participate in student panels, information sessions, coffee chats, and other prospective-student programs.
  • Answer general questions about academics, student organizations, research, internships, campus life, and the student experience.
  • Help coordinate tours and visits by managing schedules, matching visitors with ambassadors, and supporting session logistics.
  • Represent the School of Computing at recruitment events, alumni gatherings, community programs, and campus showcases such as Explore UT.
  • Assist with event check-in, guest support, presentations, setup, and other assigned tasks.
  • Stay informed about School of Computing programs, academic requirements, resources, and opportunities.
  • Communicate professionally and create a welcoming environment for all visitors.

Social Media & Content
  • Contribute to the School of Computing's social media presence by creating authentic, student-centered content throughout the academic year.
  • Dedicate approximately five hours per week to social media and content creation.
  • Create or contribute to at least one piece of social media content per month, outside of required event coverage and Day in the Life content.
  • Create at least one Day in the Life video per academic year showcasing their experience as a School of Computing student.
  • Provide social media coverage for at least two School of Computing events per academic year, capturing photos, video, interviews, or other approved content.
  • Share authentic student perspectives on classes, projects, research, campus life, internships, student organizations, career preparation, and other aspects of the student experience.
  • Develop content that is informative and engaging for current students, prospective students, families, alumni, and the broader UT Austin community.
  • Participate in content brainstorming and help identify student experiences, stories, trends, and opportunities that could be highlighted on School of Computing social media.
  • Follow UT Austin and School of Computing branding, accessibility, privacy, copyright, and social media guidelines.
  • Collaborate with School of Computing communications staff to plan, create, and refine content.

Social media assignments may include short-form videos, Instagram Reels and Stories, photos, interviews, student takeovers, event coverage, and other digital content. Assignments will be distributed based on student interests, strengths, upcoming events, and School of Computing communications priorities.
Required Qualifications
  • Be a current undergraduate student majoring in a School of Computing academic program.
  • Have completed at least one full academic year in their program.
  • Meet the minimum GPA and academic-standing requirements established by their department.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, active-listening, and public-speaking skills.
  • Be able to clearly explain academic programs and student experiences.
  • Be reliable, organized, professional, and comfortable interacting with individuals and groups.
  • Work well with university staff and other ambassadors.
  • Be willing to learn about School of Computing programs, resources, and policies.
  • Be comfortable creating or participating in social media content and representing the School of Computing online.
  • Be able to create basic photo or video content using a smartphone or other accessible recording device.

Previous leadership, mentoring, customer-service, campus-event, public-speaking, social media, photography, videography, communications, or content-creation experience is helpful but not required.
Salary Range
$14.00/hour

Time Commitment
Student Ambassador assignments will vary throughout the academic year based on visitor requests, tours, recruitment activities, events, and program needs. Ambassadors should expect to dedicate approximately five hours per week to social media and content creation, in addition to their regular ambassador assignments. Total expected hours range from 5-10 per week.
As part of their social media responsibilities, each ambassador will be expected to:
  • Create or contribute to at least two pieces of social media content per month.
  • Create at least one Day in the Life video/carousel per academic year.
  • Provide social media coverage for at least two School of Computing events per academic year.

Additional assignments may be requested based on School of Computing communications needs and the ambassador's interests and availability.

  • A publicly accessible link to your "One Day in My Life" video that best represents your storytelling style. This does not need to be newly created-share the piece you're most proud of.
  • A publicly accessible link to one "Dealer's Choice" content example that showcases your creativity and skills. This may be a short-form video, photography, graphic design, written content or another project that highlights your abilities as a creator.
