Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding quantum hardwareDeveloping quantum applications and software

Quantum Computers are physical devices that leverage quantum mechanics to perform computations, often requiring advanced physics knowledge. Quantum Software Engineers design and develop software to run on these devices, focusing on algorithms and programming. While quantum computers are hardware-focused, quantum software engineers work on the applications that utilize quantum hardware, making their roles interconnected but distinct.

What is a quantum computer?

A quantum computer is a type of computer that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information. Unlike classical computers, which use bits to represent data as 0s or 1s, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This allows quantum computers to perform certain complex calculations much faster than traditional computers. They are particularly promising for tasks such as cryptography, optimization, and simulating molecular structures. However, quantum computers are still in the experimental stage and are not yet widely available for general use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quantum Computing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantum Computing Engineer, you need a strong background in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, computer science, and often a graduate degree in physics, computer engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), simulators, and cloud-based quantum platforms is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are key soft skills that help drive innovation in this rapidly evolving domain. These skills and qualities are essential for designing, optimizing, and implementing quantum algorithms and systems that push the boundaries of computational capabilities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with quantum computers?

Professionals working with quantum computers often encounter challenges such as error rates in qubits, limited scalability of current hardware, and the need for specialized algorithms. Collaborating closely with physicists, engineers, and computer scientists is essential to troubleshoot issues and push the boundaries of what current systems can achieve. Staying up-to-date with rapid advances in both hardware and software is also key, as the field is constantly evolving and requires a commitment to ongoing learning.

Senior Opto-mechanical Engineer

Photon Queue Inc.

Lemont, IL โ€ข On-site

Job description

Company Overview

Photon Queue builds the world's leading quantum memory devices โ€“ systems that store and release single photons. Using a unique free-space storage architecture that achieves kilometer-scale optical path lengths in a compact form factor, we sidestep the fundamental limitations of every competing approach and deliver storage fidelity and efficiency levels that no other technology can match in a device that can actually be deployed and integrated into real quantum systems.

We're solving a critical infrastructure problem for the quantum ecosystem: without a reliable way to synchronize photons across a quantum network or photonic processor, the promise of quantum computing, sensing, and communications stalls. Photon Queue is the synchronization layer that makes progress possible. Our systems are already in use at Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Maryland, and demand is growing fast.

Life at Photon Queue

We're an early-stage, fast-growing team of physicists and engineers turning two decades of laboratory research into the best commercial quantum memory platform. With strong institutional backing and commercial traction at leading national labs, we're at an exciting breakout moment โ€“ the kind where the work you do today directly shapes the trajectory of the company tomorrow.

There's no corporate bureaucracy here, just sharp people working on hard problems, with direct ownership over what they build and clear visibility into its impact. Every person on the team shapes the product and the company. If you thrive in an environment where your work matters from day one and where espresso, rigor, and curiosity are the culture, you'll fit right in.

Role Summary

The Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer is the backbone of our hardware development. In this role you will take end-to-end ownership of our mechanical design - translating optical and system-level requirements into precise, manufacturable designs, owning everything from kinematic mount design and opto-mechanical sub-assembly development to the top-level CAD assembly and BOM. You will work at the intersection of optics, mechanics, test and manufacturing, serving as the central integrating force that pulls domain-specific work from across the engineering team into a coherent, buildable product that ships to the world's leading quantum research institutions.

Location: On-site, Chicago area

We are an in-office company, and our expectation is that employees primarily work from their Photon Queue office 5 days a week. However, we also recognize the importance of flexibility and trust our employees to manage their schedules responsibly. This may include occasional remote work, starting the day with morning meetings from home before heading to the office, or leaving earlier when needed to accommodate family commitments.

Compensation
  • Salary: $130k - $170k
  • Equity: 0.3% - 0.6%
Responsibilities

Concept Development

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to define system architecture and requirements, and assess feasibility
  • Develop concept designs and conduct trade studies for opto-mechanical systems and sub-assemblies

Detailed Design & Analysis

  • Own the top-level opto-mechanical layout, CAD assembly and BOM, maintaining them as the authoritative source of record for the product
  • Design, specify and integrate custom + off-the-shelf components โ€“ optical mounts (static, kinematic โ€“ manual & actuated), linear stages, Pockels cell assemblies, active alignment systems, motion controllers, PCBs, wiring, cooling systems and sealed/unsealed enclosures
  • Design assemblies for thermal stability and vibration/shock isolation to ensure robust performance in real-world operating environments โ€“ using STOP (Structural, Thermal, Optical Performance), FEA (Modal, Stress, etc) analyses for rapid design iterations
  • Translate optical error budgets into mechanical tolerances and stack-ups; run DFM/DFA reviews and material and adhesive selection to optimize for performance, manufacturability, and long-term reliability

Prototyping, Testing & Manufacturing

  • Drive quick-turn machining and prototype builds to validate designs early and iterate quickly
  • Design and build test stations, and execute engineering-level tests to characterize and verify hardware
  • Develop fixtures, jigs, tooling, and work instructions to support repeatable production builds

Execution & Delivery

  • Interface with component vendors and contract manufacturers; lead DFM discussions to ensure manufacturability and cost targets are met
  • Lead design reviews; produce drawings, BOMs, test plans, and cost models
  • Support field failure analysis as needed

Requirements

Candidates must have current US work authorization - we are unable to sponsor visas at this time.

QualificationsMinimum qualifications
  • M.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field (or a B.S. with additional experience), plus 5+ years of opto-mechanical design experience through the complete product lifecycle; a Ph.D. may count toward the experience
  • High proficiency in CAD (Onshape, SolidWorks, Catia, or equivalent), BOM management and GD&T
  • Proficiency in FEA tools (ANSYS or equivalent) for structural and thermal analysis
  • Strong understanding of tolerance stack-up analysis, kinematics, and material selection
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills โ€“ ability to present at design reviews and interface across engineering disciplines
Preferred qualifications
  • Optical design literacy sufficient to collaborate effectively with optical engineers
  • Experience with precision alignment of opto-mechanical assemblies
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including CNC machining, MIM, and casting
  • Familiarity with quality control methods including statistical process control (SPC)
  • Experience with mechatronic or actuated alignment systems
  • Familiarity with quantum or photonic systems
  • Comfortable or excited to work in a startup or fast-paced environment

We encourage you to apply even if you donโ€™t meet all of the qualifications stated above. Weโ€™re looking for the right candidate with the aptitude and drive to learn and grow with us. That may just be you!
