What is a quant?

Quants, short for quantitative analysts, are professionals who use mathematical models, statistics, and computational techniques to analyze financial data and develop trading strategies. They are typically employed by investment banks, hedge funds, asset management firms, and financial technology companies. Quants play a crucial role in pricing securities, managing risk, and optimizing portfolios. Their expertise is essential for making data-driven decisions in complex financial markets.

What does a quant do?

Quant refers to a quantitative analyst whose responsibilities are to research and analyze market trends in finance. As a quant, you research and decipher statistics and design financial models to help banks, insurance companies, and other finance-focused organizations assess and prevent their risk, make sound investments, and better understand pricing structures to increase profit. Your duties also include creating codes for programs that follow financial trends and patterns, recording data and analyses, and consulting with business leaders in an organization to offer suggestions to combat potential financial risks. Large financial institutions and firms with trading processes typically hire quants.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quant, you need strong quantitative and analytical skills, typically supported by advanced degrees in mathematics, statistics, physics, or related fields. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or C++, financial modeling, and familiarity with tools such as MATLAB or R are essential, along with knowledge of financial markets. Exceptional problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication help Quants stand out in collaborative and high-stakes environments. These skills enable Quants to develop robust models and strategies that drive critical decision-making and risk management in finance.

What are some common challenges faced by quants when collaborating with software developers and traders?

Quants often encounter challenges in bridging the gap between theoretical models and practical implementation. Effective communication is essential, as translating complex quantitative concepts into actionable trading strategies requires close collaboration with both software developers and traders. Misunderstandings can occur due to differences in technical language or priorities, so fostering a collaborative environment and being open to feedback is crucial. Regular meetings and clear documentation can help ensure that models are accurately implemented and aligned with trading objectives.

Market Research & Consumer Insights Manager

Hiebing

Madison, WI โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Retirement

Re-posted 28 days ago

Job description

At Hiebing, insights don't sit on a shelf. They shape brands.

We're looking for a Market Research & Consumer Insights Manager who is energized by understanding people, uncovering opportunities and helping clients make smarter business decisions.

This is an opportunity to lead research that influences strategy for some of the Midwest's most recognized brands. You'll partner with clients, strategists, creatives and media teams to uncover meaningful insights, identify growth opportunities and translate findings into action.

Unlike an in-house insights role focused on a single brand or category, you'll gain exposure to a wide range of industries, business challenges and audiences. One week you may be helping a healthcare organization better understand patient decision-making. The next, you may be uncovering opportunities for a financial institution, retailer or consumer brand.

If you're naturally curious, love solving complex business problems and enjoy turning research into strategic recommendations that drive action, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do
  • Lead qualitative and quantitative research initiatives from design through presentation
  • Design discussion guides, surveys and research frameworks that uncover actionable insights
  • Moderate focus groups and in-depth-interviews
  • Analyze findings and identify meaningful implications for brands and businesses
  • Translate complex research into compelling stories and recommendations
  • Present insights and strategic recommendations directly to clients and agency leadership
  • Partner with strategy, creative, media and account teams to influence marketing and business decisions
  • Leverage AI-enabled tools to accelerate research design, synthesis and reporting while applying sound judgment and strategic thinking to all recommendations
What You'll Bring
  • 4-5 years of experience in market research, consumer insights, strategic planning or a related field
  • Experience designing and executing qualitative and quantitative research
  • Strong analytical, synthesis and storytelling skills
  • Confidence presenting findings and recommendations to clients and stakeholders
  • Comfort managing multiple projects and competing priorities
  • Curiosity, initiative and a passion for understanding human behavior
Why Hiebing
  • Exposure to a diverse portfolio of brands and industries
  • Opportunity to influence strategy across multiple businesses
  • End-to-end ownership of research projects
  • Collaborative, strategy-led culture
  • A team that believes great insights should lead to action
What Makes Someone Successful Here
  • You build on ideas with a “Yes, and” mindset
  • You bring curiosity and challenge thinking in a productive way
  • You care about both the work and the people behind it
  • You hold high standards and take ownership of outcomes
Benefits include: Hybrid work flexibility, health + dental insurance, paid parental leave, matching 401(k) + profit sharing, a professional development fund and many more! This position is a hybrid position.

Work Environment & Eligibility
Hybrid role based in Madison, WI (in-office Monday–Wednesday; remote Thursday–Friday). Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.
