Job Title: Quality Inspection Supervisor / Lead Inspector

Job Description

This hands-on quality leadership role is based in a precision machining and manufacturing environment, where you will oversee inspection activities while remaining actively involved in daily technical work. You will supervise inspection functions, coordinate department workloads, and ensure precision-machined parts meet customer and engineering requirements before shipment. The position requires a strong machining and manufacturing experience, advanced blueprint reading skills, solid GD&T knowledge, and extensive experience with precision inspection equipment. You will work closely with machinists, engineers, and production personnel to support AS9100 and ISO quality requirements and to maintain a robust quality system.

Responsibilities

• Perform detailed in-process and final inspections on precision-machined parts to verify compliance with customer and engineering requirements.
• Read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings to confirm dimensional accuracy and part conformance.
• Verify dimensions and tolerances using appropriate inspection methods and ensure all measurements meet specified criteria.
• Use precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators, bore gauges, optical comparators, and surface plates to inspect parts.
• Supervise inspection activities within the department, including assigning work and overseeing daily inspection tasks.
• Schedule and coordinate the inspection department workload to meet production deadlines and customer delivery requirements.
• Train, mentor, and support inspectors, helping them develop stronger inspection, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
• Work closely with machinists, programmers, engineers, and production personnel to resolve quality issues and support manufacturing operations.
• Support and maintain AS9100 and ISO quality requirements by following established procedures and contributing to continuous improvement of the quality system.
• Participate in quality initiatives, including Statistical Process Control (SPC), root cause analysis, corrective actions, and process improvements.
• Assist with document control related to inspection records, quality reports, and compliance documentation.
• Support production by providing timely feedback on nonconformances and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
• Coordinate and perform mechanical inspections to ensure parts meet all customer, engineering, and regulatory requirements.
• Help prioritize inspection activities based on production needs, customer priorities, and internal quality goals.
• Engage in hands-on quality leadership by balancing technical inspection work with supervisory and coordination responsibilities.

Essential Skills

• 5+ years of quality inspection and metrology experience in a manufacturing or precision machining environment.
• Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and its application in precision manufacturing.
• Advanced blueprint and engineering drawing reading skills, including the ability to interpret complex dimensions and tolerances.
• Solid manufacturing and machining experience, ideally with exposure to CNC machining and precision manufacturing processes.
• Practical experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC) to monitor processes and identify trends before defects occur.
• Proficiency in using precision measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, indicators, bore gauges, optical comparators, and surface plates.
• Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including supervising inspection functions, assigning work, and prioritizing workload.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Experience performing mechanical inspection of precision-machined parts to ensure they meet customer and engineering requirements.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment supporting aerospace, defense, CNC machining, or precision manufacturing quality operations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
• Experience programming CMMs for automated inspection routines.
• Experience in performing First Article Inspections (FAI).
• Familiarity with AS9100 documentation and associated quality system requirements.
• Experience with ISO 9001 auditing and internal quality audits.
• Hands-on involvement in root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions (CAPA).
• PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) experience.
• Supplier quality experience, including working with external vendors on quality issues.
• Knowledge of calibration processes for measurement and inspection equipment.
• Exposure to Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Experience using Minitab or similar statistical software for quality reporting and data analysis.
• Experience in quality reporting, including preparing and maintaining inspection and performance metrics.
• Experience in aerospace, defense, CNC machining, or precision manufacturing quality environments is highly beneficial.

Work Environment

This role is based in a precision machining and manufacturing facility that supports aerospace and industrial customers. The environment includes CNC machining centers, precision manufacturing equipment, dedicated inspection labs, and quality stations integrated within production areas. You will work in a fast-paced manufacturing setting that combines hands-on inspection work, department coordination, production support, and quality leadership responsibilities. Daily interactions include close collaboration with machinists, engineers, programmers, production personnel, and management. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys being on the shop floor, working directly with parts and inspection tools, and leading people without transitioning into a purely administrative or desk-bound role. All required personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided to support a safe and professional work environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bellingham, MA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr.
