What is a quality engineer?

A quality engineer ensures that the products manufactured by a company are meeting company and government quality control standards. As a quality engineer, your responsibilities include assessing and developing quality assurance protocols, examining products for compliance, and training teams to follow your policies. You also record data regarding production to track quality and produce the documentation need to communicate concerns throughout the company. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) regulates the profession and offers a path to become a certified quality engineer (CQE).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Engineer, you need a solid grounding in engineering principles, quality assurance methodologies, and a relevant degree such as in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, ISO standards, statistical process control (SPC), and quality management systems (QMS) is typically required, and certifications like CQE (Certified Quality Engineer) are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues, collaborate with teams, and drive continuous improvement. These skills ensure that products and processes consistently meet standards, minimize defects, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

How does a quality engineer typically collaborate with other departments to ensure product quality?

Quality Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, design, and supply chain to uphold product standards. They often participate in team meetings, review process documentation, and coordinate root cause analyses with engineers and operators. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are key, as they must ensure that quality requirements are clearly understood and implemented throughout each stage of production. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve issues quickly but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement across the organization.

What is the difference between Quality Engineer vs Quality Technician?

AspectQuality EngineerQuality Technician
ResponsibilitiesDesigning quality systems, process improvements, root cause analysisInspecting products, conducting tests, recording quality data
Required SkillsAnalytical skills, problem-solving, knowledge of quality standardsAttention to detail, testing procedures, data collection
CertificationsASQ CQE, Six SigmaASQ CQPA, basic quality certifications
Work EnvironmentOffice, manufacturing plants, cross-functional teamsManufacturing floors, labs, inspection stations

Quality Engineers focus on developing and improving quality systems and processes, while Quality Technicians primarily perform inspections and tests to ensure product quality. Both roles are essential in maintaining standards, but they differ in scope and responsibilities.

How much does a quality engineer earn?

The average salary for a quality engineer varies by location and experience but typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with certifications like Six Sigma or ISO may earn higher salaries. Salaries can also be influenced by industry, company size, and specific skills such as proficiency with quality management tools.

What degree do you need for a quality engineer?

A quality engineer typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field. Relevant skills include knowledge of quality management systems and tools like Six Sigma or ISO standards, and some roles may prefer or require professional certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).

Quality Engineer

We are looking for a detail-driven Quality Engineer to join our manufacturing team. In this role, you will develop and maintain quality systems, lead root cause investigations, and serve as a technical resource for quality across production and engineering. Your work directly supports our commitment to delivering products that meet the highest customer and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Quality Systems & Engineering

  • Develop, implement, and maintain quality control procedures, work instructions, and inspection plans in accordance with ISO 9001 and customer requirements.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) investigations for internal nonconformances, customer complaints, and supplier quality issues.
  • Perform first article inspections (FAI), in-process inspections, and final product inspections to verify conformance to drawings and specifications.
  • Analyze quality data and metrics to identify trends, drive corrective actions, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) to management.
  • Support and participate in internal and external audits, including ISO certification, customer, and supplier audits.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and supply chain to review and approve engineering changes, deviations, and waivers.
  • Manage the disposition of nonconforming material (NCM), including tagging, segregation, rework, scrap, and supplier returns.
  • Maintain and improve the calibration program for measuring and test equipment (MTE) in compliance with applicable standards.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) activities by reviewing design documentation, conducting process capability studies, and establishing acceptance criteria.
  • Assist in supplier qualification, performance monitoring, and development to ensure incoming material quality.
  • Prepare and maintain quality documentation including control plans, FMEAs, MSA reports, and process flow diagrams.
  • Train production and quality personnel on quality standards, procedures, and inspection methods.
  • Operate precision measurement equipment including calipers, micrometers, CMMs, and optical comparators.
  • Act as a point of contact for quality-related customer communications and support customer-specific quality requirements.
  • Additional duties as business needs require.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, onsite position. Core hours follow a standard manufacturing schedule, with occasional flexibility required during audits or critical production events.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 2+ years of quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 or an equivalent quality management system.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis tools such as 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone, and FMEA methodologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC), process capability analysis (Cpk), and data-driven decision making.
  • Proficiency with quality software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with valve, fluid control, or industrial manufacturing processes preferred.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or similar certification preferred.
  • Experience with precision measurement tools and CMM operation preferred.

Soft Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to product quality.
  • Effective written and verbal communication across all organizational levels.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to partner cross-functionally with production, engineering, and supply chain teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured, data-driven approach.
  • Reliability, accountability, and a strong sense of professional ethics.
