What is a quality engineer?

A quality engineer ensures that the products manufactured by a company are meeting company and government quality control standards. As a quality engineer, your responsibilities include assessing and developing quality assurance protocols, examining products for compliance, and training teams to follow your policies. You also record data regarding production to track quality and produce the documentation need to communicate concerns throughout the company. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) regulates the profession and offers a path to become a certified quality engineer (CQE).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Engineer, you need a solid grounding in engineering principles, quality assurance methodologies, and a relevant degree such as in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, ISO standards, statistical process control (SPC), and quality management systems (QMS) is typically required, and certifications like CQE (Certified Quality Engineer) are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues, collaborate with teams, and drive continuous improvement. These skills ensure that products and processes consistently meet standards, minimize defects, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

How does a quality engineer typically collaborate with other departments to ensure product quality?

Quality Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, design, and supply chain to uphold product standards. They often participate in team meetings, review process documentation, and coordinate root cause analyses with engineers and operators. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are key, as they must ensure that quality requirements are clearly understood and implemented throughout each stage of production. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve issues quickly but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement across the organization.

What is the difference between Quality Engineer vs Quality Technician?

AspectQuality EngineerQuality Technician
ResponsibilitiesDesigning quality systems, process improvements, root cause analysisInspecting products, conducting tests, recording quality data
Required SkillsAnalytical skills, problem-solving, knowledge of quality standardsAttention to detail, testing procedures, data collection
CertificationsASQ CQE, Six SigmaASQ CQPA, basic quality certifications
Work EnvironmentOffice, manufacturing plants, cross-functional teamsManufacturing floors, labs, inspection stations

Quality Engineers focus on developing and improving quality systems and processes, while Quality Technicians primarily perform inspections and tests to ensure product quality. Both roles are essential in maintaining standards, but they differ in scope and responsibilities.

How much does a quality engineer earn?

The average salary for a quality engineer varies by location and experience but typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with certifications like Six Sigma or ISO may earn higher salaries. Salaries can also be influenced by industry, company size, and specific skills such as proficiency with quality management tools.

What degree do you need for a quality engineer?

A quality engineer typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field. Relevant skills include knowledge of quality management systems and tools like Six Sigma or ISO standards, and some roles may prefer or require professional certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).

Job description

Position Summary

The Project Quality Engineer will manage product and construction quality activities for Low Voltage (LV) Busway systems used primarily in hyperscale data centers and other mission-critical facilities.

The position will support both post-delivery product quality and on-site construction quality, including site inspections, SAT documentation, nonconformance management, troubleshooting coordination, and corrective action follow-up. The engineer will serve as a key communication point among customers, contractors, field service technicians, manufacturing facilities in Korea and Mexico, and the Engineering and Quality teams at the Korean headquarters.

This is not primarily a hands-on technician position. The main responsibilities are technical review, quality documentation, issue management, and coordination. However, the engineer may be assigned to a construction site for an extended period to manage project quality activities.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Manage product and construction quality issues involving busway systems at customer and project sites.
  • Monitor busway installation quality and verify compliance with approved drawings, specifications, installation manuals, and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate site inspections, Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), troubleshooting, repairs, replacements, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare and maintain SAT reports, inspection records, nonconformance reports, technical reports, corrective action reports, and project quality documentation.
  • Investigate field quality issues and determine whether they are related to product quality, installation, transportation, or site conditions.
  • Support root cause analysis, risk assessment, and corrective and preventive actions with factories and Engineering teams.
  • Coordinate quality-related activities with customers, contractors, field service technicians, project teams, factories, and headquarters.
  • Communicate technical findings, corrective actions, and preventive measures to customers and project stakeholders.
  • Review electrical drawings, installation drawings, technical specifications, manuals, and AutoCAD files.
  • Identify recurring project quality issues and recommend improvements to products, manufacturing, installation, and quality processes.
  • Travel up to 50% and accept extended assignments at construction sites when required.
Candidate Profile
  • Entry-level candidates and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required; Electrical Engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, power distribution equipment, or construction quality management is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, technical manuals, and AutoCAD drawings.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation, coordination, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Fluent English communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • Korean language skills are preferred but not required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
Travel
  • Approved business travel expenses, including transportation and lodging, will be handled in accordance with company policy.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and work at active construction sites for extended periods.

Note: Duties and responsibilities may change based on business, project, or customer needs.
