Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Cancer Registrar I supports the Tampa General Cancer Institute and its affiliates by ensuring cancer data are abstracted completely and accurately in accordance with American College of Surgeons and Florida Cancer Data System requirements. The position performs case finding, abstracts eligible cancer cases, and maintains lifetime follow-up information. The position also supports tumor conferences, Cancer Committee activities, Commission on Cancer accreditation and survey readiness, Rapid Cancer Reporting System submissions, and Florida Cancer Data System reporting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Abstracts patient history, diagnosis, staging, treatment, and other required cancer data in accordance with applicable state, federal, and accrediting requirements.
  • Reviews abstract edits, resolves errors, and maintains the established quarterly accuracy benchmark of at least 90%.
  • Meets productivity standards established in Cancer Registry policies and procedures.
  • Reviews pathology, cytology, discharge, oncology, and other designated records to identify reportable cancer cases.
  • Classifies cases as analytic or nonanalytic and documents nonreportable cases in accordance with applicable registry requirements.
  • Maintains case-finding accuracy and productivity standards established by the Cancer Registry.
  • Completes required patient follow-up activities in accordance with Cancer Registry policies and Commission on Cancer standards.
  • Supports accurate and timely submissions to the Florida Cancer Data System and assists with authorized cancer data requests and reports.
  • Documents applicable Rapid Cancer Reporting System and National Cancer Database measures within cancer registry abstracts.
  • Applies current Commission on Cancer, Florida Cancer Data System, and other applicable registry standards to assigned work.
  • Maintains current cancer registry manuals and reference materials.
  • Completes the continuing education required to maintain the Oncology Data Specialist-Certified credential.
  • Obtains and annually renews the required Florida Cancer Data System Abstractor Code.
  • Supports Cancer Institute quality-improvement initiatives related to cancer data accuracy, compliance, and patient outcomes.

Requirements
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree.
  • At least one year of cancer registry abstracting experience in a Commission on Cancer-accredited (CoC) facility.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION
  • Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS) Abstractor Code required or obtained within one month of hire.
  • Oncology Data Specialist Certified (ODS-C) required or obtained within one year of hire

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of cancer registry abstracting, case finding, patient follow-up, and data-entry procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable state, federal, and accrediting requirements, including NCRA, FCDS, CoC, and NAACCR standards.
  • Skill in interpreting diagnoses and analyzing clinical information contained in medical records.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems, including Epic, and related data-entry applications.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for working professionally with physicians, staff, and external agencies.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
