Position Information
Job Title Assistant, Welding Lab (Part-Time Temporary) Full Time/Part Time Part-time Job Description
This position provides basic support to welding laboratory operations under the direction of the Department Chair and area faculty. This is a part time temporary position up to 25 hours/week.
Duties/Functions
  • Prepare metal for lab exercises using a grinder and plasma track torch. Included in this may be minor troubleshooting of the plasma track torch system, reviewing quality control of beveled cuts and keeping up an acceptable production rate.
  • Maintain welding booths, demo stations and tool storage organized and in good working order for student use. This includes: repairing metal fixtures with plasma arc cutting and GMAW (MIG welding), using hand tools, minor troubleshooting and repair of welding equipment and cleaning and organizing of storage racks, shelves and cabinets.
  • Monitor inventory of metal lab materials and consumables, control, distribute and inform re-order process when necessary.
  • Adhere to all established safety standards in the laboratory environment.
Difficult Challenges
  • Work is typically performed in a welding shop environment. Students of all ages and abilities are in the shop while working.

  • Welding Certificate or Diploma from a professional school/college or documented industrial experience
Experience Required
  • Experience in basic plasma arc cutting, MIG welding and hand and power tool use.
  • Experience with Microsoft word

  • One year shop experience in a facility that does metals fabrication
  • Experience with industrial maintenance and production welding.
KSA Required
  • While on campus the lab assistant shall uphold the standards of a professional employee of the college and comply with the welding program handbook.
  • The lab assistant must have a self-starter work ethic.
  • The lab assistant must be reliable as exhibited through attendance and punctuality.
KSA Preferred Department/Job Specific Requirements
  • Performs safety and security watch at all times.
  • May give students help on machine and process set up for welding operations.
  • Follow daily special project instructions as needed.
  • Inform instructors of safety violations and issues
Physical Demands
  • Work requires lifting equipment and materials and standing for long periods of time.
  • Work may be performed in confined spaces.
