Job description

Job Summary

The Quality Technician is responsible for verifying that composite parts and processes meet internal and customer quality requirements through in-process, final, and dimensional inspections. This role utilizes metrology tools and visual inspection techniques to ensure compliance with control plans, work instructions, and engineering drawings. Quality Technicians also support problem-solving initiatives and continuous improvement efforts in alignment with the IATF 16949 Quality Management System.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Performs detailed inspection, sampling, and sorting of finished products per customer’s specification, blueprint, proof, and job ticket. QA will utilize job-specific AQL level to determine sampling count. These inspections include all finished products prior to shipment to customers.
  • Perform inspection utilizing calipers and measuring equipment if necessary.
  • Completes C of C (Certificate of Conformance) which includes SMI Composites’ standard form, customer supply, or custom C of C. QA will also coordinate submission of customer requested documents such as material certifications.
  • Supports Quality Engineer in completing First Article Inspection Reports and/or PPAP process and documents.
  • Supports Out the box Inspections and documents any inspection issues in a clear and understandable manner on the appropriate forms and communicates those issues to the supervisor and appropriate personnel.
  • Initiates non-conforming material reports required as INCR’s (Internal Nonconformance Report) Segregates defects according to departmental procedures.
  • Performs detailed First Article inspection on parts or samples of products from production per approved procedures and work instructions using appropriate specifications and measuring equipment.

  • Provide support in completing Quality reports, Quality Charts.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area.
  • Follow all department work instructions.
  • Supports the Quality Department and Final Inspection Lead in scheduling of jobs, sorting, prioritizing and assigning to the Final Inspectors.
  • Ensures compliance with company safety rules and policies.
  • Perform fit checks to confirm assembly compatibility.
  • Isolate and identify nonconforming material or products.
  • Support sorting, re-inspection, and rework validation activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for NCRs and rework status.
  • Maintain detailed inspection records and input data into ERP and QMS systems.
  • Communicate quality issues to production and escalate when necessary.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule depending on production demands. Overtime and weekends required at times
  • Functions well in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful team environment
  • Ability to manage time to meet production deadlines and schedules
  • Broad understanding of safety systems and enforcement of safety rules and policies
  • Demonstrates excellent team building and conflict management skills
  • A fundamental understanding of basic manufacturing operations and an eye for detail
  • At least 2 years in a quality position, preferrable automotive quality
  • Proficiency with measuring instruments and inspection methods
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and understand tolerances.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time
  • Constant and repetitive movement of fingers, hands, and wrists
