Cessford Construction Company, a CRH company, is a supplier of construction materials servicing Central Iowa, Southeast Iowa and West Central Illinois. Those materials include hot mix asphalt, crushed limestone, sand and gravel and ready mix concrete. With multiple locations, Cessford offers a variety of employment opportunities for people throughout Iowa and Western Illinois.

Position Overview

This Lead Quality Control Technician is responsible for performing and supervising routine tests as required on raw materials, in-process components, and finished delivery of products. In addition, this position will supervise and direct technicians in the performance of tests, inspections, processing methods, materials qualifications, and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Supervises daily quality control operations and Quality Control field personnel.
  • Perform and/or supervise the sampling, processing, and testing of materials to meet required DOT specifications.
  • Monitor and test process functions to ensure products meet or exceed requirements.
  • Prepare and record accurate information; maintain databases; documentation of onsite observations and test results; and communicating results appropriately.
  • Perform maintenance and calibration of lab testing equipment and maintain documentation.
  • Follow all company policies and OSHA / MSHA regulations for safe working procedures.
  • Ensure a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task.
  • Initiate and conduct training of Quality Control field and plant technicians and maintain training records on all certified employees.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with General Managers, Plant Managers, Construction Superintendent and Forepersons, Safety Personnel, in-house testing personnel, state and local testing labs, and existing and new customers.
  • Troubleshoot product issues in the field with plant manager, operations manager, and Quality Control field technician, and conduct problem resolution with customer upon approval from General Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Associate degree in Construction Technology/Management, Civil Engineering or equivalent; and three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • IDOT Aggregates testing level 1 and 2 certification or equivalent with the ability to obtain certification in all areas of the field.

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal/motor vehicle background check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driverโ€™s license. 
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Regular, on-time and consistent attendance is required; must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays when necessary.
  • Report to work dressed appropriately and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. 
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Requires an extensive knowledge of aggregates and respective DOT requirements for products.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, such as sampling frequency, sampling methods, gradation requirements, quality requirements, best practices, and equipment.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft suite of tools including Excel, Word and Outlook and database software. Must be able to utilize internet and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read, write and do basic mathematical calculations to keep time and material records, and read blueprints or other project documents.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships and to work with teams as both a leader and participant.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills; building rapport, listening, presenting, giving and receiving feedback.
  • Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs and other conditions that may affect their daily responsibilities.
  • Able to work independently with attention to detail.  
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions from supervisors to complete assigned tasks.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.  A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment) is required, and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions.  While performing non-field duties in this position, the environment is typical of an office setting, and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
