Job Description:

The Senior Cost Control Engineer is responsible for leading and managing comprehensive cost control functions across large-scale construction projects, ensuring alignment with Fortis and client financial standards and contractual obligations. This role plays a key part in project success by overseeing project setup, cost structure compliance, forecasting, change management, and financial reporting. With advanced industry knowledge and strong technical proficiency, this role contributes to continuous improvement across project teams and cost control practices.
  • Collaborate with the Fortis Cost Control Manager, Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Project Accountants to support cross-functional cost control efforts on projects.

  • Lead project setup to ensure compliance with contractual requirements and company standards, ensuring cost structures and coding are properly implemented and maintained through project completion.

  • Prepare comprehensive monthly spend forecasts by incorporating internal and external inputs, project schedule, change order logs, and risk logs.

  • Review Subcontracts for accuracy and ensure inclusion of required flow-down language from the Prime Contract.

  • Participate in and contribute to the month-end financial close process, including billings, revenue recognition, fee analysis and labor projections.

  • Provide quality control and oversight for project specific financial processes, including alignment with Owner Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)/Cost structure, change management procedures, billing accuracy, and project closeout compliance.

  • Develop and analyze project financial data to assess overall health, identify trends and highlight potential risks and opportunities.

  • Conduct field audits to verify project progress, work in place, and identify and document any variances. Engage with scope leads to evaluate trade partner financial health and provide guidance or support where needed.

  • Maintain and oversee key financial logs and reporting tools, including change order logs, owner allowance logs, contingency logs and risk registers.

  • Lead change order review meetings with the owner and project teams; independently evaluate change orders to ensure compliance with contractual and owner requirements.

  • Perform accurate data entry and track progress for all project change orders, including internal, owner and subcontractor changes.

  • Lead financial audits throughout the project lifecycle and drive final project audit and closeout processes, ensuring adherence to contractual obligations.

  • Collaborate with the internal cost control team to share best practices, lessons learned and support alignment across all project sites and clients.

  • Assist in other duties as assigned, relevant to the achievement of the position's and team's objectives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in a cost control, cost management, or financial reporting role.

  • Bachelor's degree in related degree program, or equivalent work experience.

  • Strong time management and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective written communication tailored to the intended audience.

  • Demonstrates commitment to company core values and relationship building.

  • Strong adherence to and promotion of Fortis Safety Culture

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Projects, etc.).

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams daily.

  • Experience with budget management software and tools.

  • Solid knowledge or hands-on experience in financial management, including change management workflows, contractual obligations, estimating, and cost reporting.

  • Strong understanding of building sequencing and project scheduling.

  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record in accordance with Fortis policy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience supporting large-scale construction projects.

  • Advanced knowledge of the construction industry practices, standards and terminology.

  • OSHA 10 Safety Training certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A portion of work is performed in a professional office environment with presence in the work areas of active Fortis construction sites (where wearing personal protective equipment is required) and within site office
