What does a quality assurance incoming inspector do?

A Quality Assurance Incoming Inspector is responsible for inspecting and verifying the quality of raw materials, components, or products as they arrive from suppliers before they are used in the manufacturing process. They check for defects, compliance with specifications, and adherence to quality standards. Their role helps ensure that only materials that meet company criteria are used, which helps prevent production issues and maintains product quality. Inspectors typically use measuring tools, review documentation, and may create reports on their findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality assurance incoming inspector?

To thrive as a Quality Assurance Incoming Inspector, you need strong attention to detail, knowledge of quality control standards, and often a background in manufacturing or a related technical field. Familiarity with measurement tools (calipers, micrometers), inspection software, and sometimes certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Inspector are typically required. Excellent documentation skills, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication are essential soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate verification of incoming materials, support compliance with quality standards, and help prevent defects in the manufacturing process.

What are some typical challenges faced by quality assurance incoming inspectors when evaluating new materials or components?

Quality Assurance Incoming Inspectors often encounter challenges such as identifying subtle defects in large batches, understanding complex technical specifications, and keeping up with evolving quality standards. They must work closely with suppliers and internal teams to resolve discrepancies and ensure that all incoming materials meet strict requirements. Managing time effectively to inspect high volumes without sacrificing accuracy is also a critical aspect of the role.

Its platform is focused on automating and orchestrating lab operations—from liquid handling and robotic systems to workflow software such as Cellario—supporting use cases like drug discovery, genomics, and other high-throughput research.

Position Summary

HighRes is seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented Quality Assurance Inspector to support quality operations across incoming inspection, manufacturing floor inspections, and End-of-Line (EOL) verification activities. In this role, you will inspect precision mechanical components, assemblies, and finished products to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, and company quality standards.
The ideal candidate has experience working with tight tolerance mechanical parts, interpreting engineering documentation, and utilizing precision inspection equipment within a manufacturing environment. This position works closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to support product quality, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Perform incoming inspections of raw materials, machined components, assemblies, and supplier-provided parts.
  • Conduct in-process and on-the-floor inspections to support manufacturing and assembly operations.
  • Perform End-of-Line (EOL) inspections and final verification activities prior to product release.
  • Inspect precision mechanical components with tight tolerances using calibrated inspection and metrology equipment.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, GD&T, work instructions, and inspection criteria.
  • Verify dimensional accuracy, fit, alignment, workmanship, labeling, and functional requirements.
  • Document inspection results, nonconformances, and disposition information within quality systems and records.
  • Support Material Review Board (MRB) activities, containment actions, and rework verification as needed.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Engineering, Operations, and Quality teams to resolve quality-related issues.
  • Support First Article Inspections (FAI), investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure inspection equipment is properly handled and calibration status is verified prior to use.
  • Maintain compliance with company Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and applicable standards.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or technical certification preferred.
  • 3–5 years of quality inspection experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience inspecting precision mechanical components and assemblies with tight tolerances using CMM equipment (Hexagon CMM and PC-DMIS)
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and inspection requirements.
  • Proficiency with inspection and metrology equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, thread gauges, and vision systems.
  • Experience supporting incoming, in-process, and final inspection activities.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
