Quality Assurance Engineer Startup information

What does a quality assurance engineer do at a startup?

A Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer at a startup is responsible for ensuring that the company's products or services meet high standards of quality before they are released to customers. This involves designing and executing test plans, identifying bugs, and collaborating with developers to resolve issues quickly. In a startup environment, QA Engineers often wear multiple hats, helping to set up testing processes, automate tests, and contribute to product discussions. Their work helps prevent costly errors, improve user satisfaction, and support the rapid growth typical of startups.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a quality assurance engineer at a startup?

To thrive as a Quality Assurance Engineer at a startup, you need strong analytical skills, experience with software testing methodologies, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium or Cypress), bug tracking systems (such as Jira), and version control (like Git) is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving ability, adaptability, and clear communication are crucial soft skills in a dynamic startup environment. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure product reliability and rapid iteration while collaborating effectively in a fast-paced, resource-constrained setting.

How does working as a quality assurance engineer at a startup differ from working at a larger company?

As a Quality Assurance Engineer at a startup, you'll likely wear multiple hats, balancing hands-on testing with designing automation frameworks and occasionally contributing to process improvements. The pace is typically faster, with shorter release cycles and a greater emphasis on flexibility and adaptability. Collaboration is close-knit, as you'll work directly with developers, product managers, and sometimes even customers to prioritize and resolve issues quickly. This environment provides significant opportunities for learning and rapid career growth, but it can also mean handling ambiguity and shifting priorities.

What is the difference between Quality Assurance Engineer Startup vs Quality Assurance Tester?

AspectQuality Assurance Engineer StartupQuality Assurance Tester

Industry UsageCommon in tech startups, SaaS, app developmentWidespread across industries, including startups and enterprises

In summary, a Quality Assurance Engineer Startup typically has broader responsibilities, including automation and process development, while a Quality Assurance Tester focuses mainly on executing tests and identifying bugs. Both roles require similar credentials and are found in startup environments, but the engineer role involves more strategic and technical tasks.

Plenful is on a mission to transform healthcare operations from the inside out. Fresh off our $50M Series B and backed by Notable Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, TQ Ventures, Susa/Kivu Ventures, and other leading investors, we’re building the category-defining AI workflow automation platform that healthcare teams rely on to operate smarter, faster, and more efficiently. Our technology empowers healthcare operators across hospital and health systems, pharmacies and payors to eliminate manual work, reduce administrative burden, and improve compliance, all while unlocking critical revenue to fund programs for their in-need patient populations.

Built by healthcare operators for healthcare operators, Plenful is driven by a deep understanding of the challenges facing today’s care teams. We’re passionate about equipping healthcare workers with world‑class tools that deliver real, measurable impact, and we’re proud to serve 90+ leading health systems across the country. If you’re excited to help shape the future of healthcare, we’d love to meet you.

About The Role

We're looking for a midlevel or Senior QA Engineer who's passionate about quality engineering, automation, and building scalable testing practices from the ground up. You'll help define the future of quality at Plenful, partnering closely with Engineering, Product, and Design to deliver reliable software at startup speed.

In your first six months, you'll establish and improve automated testing coverage across our core platform, integrate automated testing throughout our deployment pipeline to reduce regression risk, and build the quality metrics that give engineering teams the confidence to ship faster without sacrificing reliability.

What You'll Do
  • Own quality strategy across multiple products and engineering teams
  • Design, build, and maintain robust automated test suites for web applications, APIs, backend services, and integrations
  • Develop testing frameworks that are scalable, maintainable, and integrated into CI/CD pipelines
  • Partner with software engineers during feature development to identify quality risks early
  • Define test plans, acceptance criteria, and release readiness for new product initiatives
  • Perform exploratory, functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end testing where appropriate
  • Drive automation-first testing practices while minimizing manual regression testing
  • Work closely with Product Managers and Designers to ensure requirements are testable and complete
  • Monitor production quality metrics and partner with engineering to investigate customer-reported issues
  • Champion engineering excellence through code reviews of test automation, quality metrics, and continuous process improvements
  • Mentor engineers on testing best practices and help build a culture where quality is everyone's responsibility
You May Be a Fit If
  • You have 7+ years of experience in Quality Assurance or Quality Engineering
  • You've built automated testing frameworks for modern SaaS applications
  • You've tested REST APIs and microservice-based architectures
  • You have experience with YAML-based testing
  • You're proficient with one or more automation frameworks — Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or similar
  • You write automated tests in TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, or C#
  • You have a strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated testing into deployment workflows
  • You have experience with Git, GitHub, GitHub Actions, and modern software development practices
  • You're familiar with SQL and validating data across relational databases
  • You have strong debugging and root‑cause analysis skills
  • You communicate well and collaborate easily across Engineering, Product, and Design
Bonus Points If You
  • Have tested AI or machine learning‑enabled applications
  • Have worked with healthcare software or in regulated environments
  • Are familiar with Kubernetes, Docker, and cloud‑native architectures
  • Have experience with performance, load, or security testing
  • Have tested workflow automation platforms or enterprise SaaS products
  • Have exposure to observability platforms such as Datadog, Grafana, or similar
  • Have worked in fast‑paced startup environments
Technologies you'll likely work with:

Python, TypeScript, React, YAML, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, GitHub Actions, Playwright, REST APIs, and AI/LLM integrations

Why You'll Love Working Here
  • Mission-Driven, World‑Class Team — Join an exceptional group of professionals aligned around a meaningful mission and committed to making an impact
  • Opportunities for Growth — Strengthen your expertise through collaboration with experienced, high‑performing leaders across the organization
  • Flexible Hybrid Work Environment — We're remote-first, with meaningful office presence in San Francisco and New York. R&D roles follow a hybrid model, with two days per week in our San Francisco office
Benefits & Perks
  • Healthcare Coverage — Full medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and participation for your family
  • 401(k) with Company Match — Plenful matches 50% of your first 3% contributed
  • Equity — Every full‑time employee shares in our success
  • Unlimited PTO — Take the time you need, when you need it
  • Daily Lunch Stipend — $100/week to cover your midday meals
  • Wellness Stipend — $100/month to support your health and well-being
  • Commuter Benefits — $100/month for SF and NYC‑based employees
  • Parental Leave — Paid leave to support growing families
