Quality Assurance Engineer Startup information

What does a quality assurance engineer do at a startup?

A Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer at a startup is responsible for ensuring that the company's products or services meet high standards of quality before they are released to customers. This involves designing and executing test plans, identifying bugs, and collaborating with developers to resolve issues quickly. In a startup environment, QA Engineers often wear multiple hats, helping to set up testing processes, automate tests, and contribute to product discussions. Their work helps prevent costly errors, improve user satisfaction, and support the rapid growth typical of startups.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a quality assurance engineer at a startup?

To thrive as a Quality Assurance Engineer at a startup, you need strong analytical skills, experience with software testing methodologies, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automated testing tools (like Selenium or Cypress), bug tracking systems (such as Jira), and version control (like Git) is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving ability, adaptability, and clear communication are crucial soft skills in a dynamic startup environment. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure product reliability and rapid iteration while collaborating effectively in a fast-paced, resource-constrained setting.

How does working as a quality assurance engineer at a startup differ from working at a larger company?

As a Quality Assurance Engineer at a startup, you'll likely wear multiple hats, balancing hands-on testing with designing automation frameworks and occasionally contributing to process improvements. The pace is typically faster, with shorter release cycles and a greater emphasis on flexibility and adaptability. Collaboration is close-knit, as you'll work directly with developers, product managers, and sometimes even customers to prioritize and resolve issues quickly. This environment provides significant opportunities for learning and rapid career growth, but it can also mean handling ambiguity and shifting priorities.

What is the difference between Quality Assurance Engineer Startup vs Quality Assurance Tester?

AspectQuality Assurance Engineer StartupQuality Assurance Tester
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field, certifications like ISTQBSimilar certifications, often entry-level
Work EnvironmentFast-paced startup, collaborative teams, agile methodologiesVaries from startups to larger companies, often more structured
ResponsibilitiesDesigning test plans, automation, process improvementExecuting test cases, reporting bugs
Industry UsageCommon in tech startups, SaaS, app developmentWidespread across industries, including startups and enterprises

In summary, a Quality Assurance Engineer Startup typically has broader responsibilities, including automation and process development, while a Quality Assurance Tester focuses mainly on executing tests and identifying bugs. Both roles require similar credentials and are found in startup environments, but the engineer role involves more strategic and technical tasks.

Artificial Intelligence QA Engineer (Quality Assurance Engineer)

Job description

๐Ÿš€ We're Hiring: QA Engineer โ€” Gadriel AI Corp. (Fully Remote)

Gadriel AI Corp. is building the pre-production validation layer for the AI era. As AI writes more of the world's code โ€” and AI agents take on more autonomous work โ€” someone has to make sure it's actually correct, secure, and reliable before it ships. That's our whole reason for existing. We're an early-stage startup (NVIDIA Inception member) building tools that validate AI-generated code and AI agent behavior before it reaches production.

We're looking for a detail-obsessed QA Engineer to help us hold our own product to the same standard we hold everyone else's code to.

About the role: This is a fully remote, high-ownership QA role at an early-stage startup. You won't be running a checklist somebody else wrote โ€” you'll be building our testing strategy, our test infrastructure, and our quality culture from close to the ground floor. You'll work directly with the founders and engineering team, and your judgment on what "ready to ship" means will carry real weight.

What you'll do:

  • Design, build, and maintain test plans and test suites across our AI validation products
  • Perform manual and automated testing of CLI tools, integrations, and web-facing dashboards
  • Test integrations with AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot, and others) to make sure our tooling behaves correctly inside each environment
  • Build and maintain automated regression, integration, and end-to-end test suites
  • Validate scan accuracy โ€” help ensure findings are correct, reproducible, and free of false positives/negatives
  • Test across multiple operating systems (Linux, macOS Intel/Apple Silicon, Windows) and language ecosystems
  • Own bug triage: reproduce, document, prioritize, and track issues through to resolution
  • Work closely with engineering to build testability into the product from the start, not bolt it on after
  • Help define QA process and tooling as the team scales โ€” you'll be shaping this, not just following it
  • Participate in release testing and sign-off before ship

What we're looking for:

  • Solid experience in software QA โ€” manual testing, test case design, and automated testing frameworks
  • Comfortable testing CLI tools and developer-facing products, not just web UIs
  • Experience with test automation tools/frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, pytest, Jest, or similar)
  • Strong bug-hunting instincts and the discipline to document issues clearly and reproducibly
  • Familiarity with npm/Node.js ecosystems and command-line environments
  • Comfortable working across multiple OSes and language/runtime environments
  • Startup mindset: high autonomy, comfortable with ambiguity, able to self-direct in a small remote team
  • Strong written communication โ€” as a remote-first team, most of our collaboration happens async
  • Bonus: experience testing security tools (SAST/SCA/secrets scanners) or developer tooling
  • Bonus: hands-on experience using AI coding assistants day-to-day
  • Bonus: experience with CI/CD pipelines and testing within them

A note on how we work: We build the tools we sell, and we use them ourselves โ€” you should be comfortable getting hands-on with our product, Gadriel AI Code Assurance (GCA), as part of understanding what you're testing. It runs locally alongside AI coding assistants and validates code as it's written. It's free for individual developers, so you can try it out directly:

npm install -g gadriel

What we offer:

  • Meaningful equity in an early-stage, founder-led startup
  • Fully remote โ€” work from wherever you do your best work
  • Direct access to founders and real influence over product quality and process
  • A fast-paced environment where your work ships quickly and matters
  • The chance to help define what "quality" means for one of the newer categories in AI tooling
