What is qualitative analysis?

Qualitative analysis is a research method focused on understanding concepts, opinions, or experiences through non-numerical data such as interviews, observations, and text analysis. Unlike quantitative analysis, which relies on numbers and statistics, qualitative analysis seeks to explore patterns, themes, and meanings in data. It is commonly used in fields like social sciences, marketing, education, and healthcare to gain deeper insights into human behavior and motivations. The process often involves coding data, identifying themes, and interpreting the findings to answer research questions.

How does a qualitative analyst typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a research project?

Qualitative analysts often work closely with cross-functional teams such as product managers, UX designers, and marketing specialists throughout a research project. They facilitate stakeholder interviews to gather varied perspectives, present key findings in accessible formats, and participate in brainstorming sessions to translate insights into actionable strategies. Regular communication and feedback loops ensure that research outcomes align with business objectives and that insights are effectively integrated into decision-making processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a qualitative analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Qualitative Analyst, you need strong research skills, expertise in data collection methods like interviews and focus groups, and often a background in social sciences or related fields. Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo, Atlas.ti, or MAXQDA, and sometimes certifications in qualitative research methods, are commonly required. Excellent critical thinking, communication, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for interpreting nuanced data and presenting findings clearly. These abilities ensure accurate, insightful analysis that drives meaningful organizational decisions and research outcomes.

What is the difference between Qualitative Analysis vs Data Analyst?

AspectQualitative AnalysisData Analyst
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in social sciences, marketing, or related fieldsDegree in statistics, mathematics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch settings, consulting firms, marketing agenciesCorporate offices, data-driven departments, tech companies
Industry UsageMarket research, social sciences, user experienceBusiness intelligence, finance, healthcare
Common Search/ComparisonFocuses on non-numerical insightsFocuses on numerical data and trends

Qualitative Analysis involves interpreting non-numerical data like interviews and observations, often used in social sciences and market research. Data Analysts primarily work with numerical data to identify trends and support decision-making. While both roles analyze data, Qualitative Analysis emphasizes understanding context and meaning, whereas Data Analysts focus on quantitative metrics.

Is qualitative analysis a stressful job?

Qualitative analysis can be stressful due to the need for attention to detail, critical thinking, and meeting deadlines. The level of stress varies depending on the work environment, workload, and experience of the analyst, but it generally involves analytical and interpretive skills rather than physical demands.

What do qualitative analysts do?

Qualitative analysts examine non-numerical data such as interviews, focus groups, and observations to identify patterns, themes, and insights. They often use methods like content analysis and coding, and may utilize software tools such as NVivo or Atlas.ti. Their work supports understanding behaviors, motivations, and perceptions in research or business contexts.

What skills are needed for qualitative analysis?

Qualitative analysis requires strong critical thinking, excellent communication skills, and the ability to interpret non-numerical data such as interviews, observations, and textual information. Familiarity with research methods, data coding, and analysis tools like NVivo or Atlas.ti is also important for effectively conducting qualitative research.

Job description

Harkcon is seeking a Qualitative Mission Analysis Expert to lead stakeholder research and qualitative analysis supporting the Coast Guard’s assessment of current and future operations. This individual must be self-directed, operationally curious, and capable of translating stakeholder insights into defensible mission-performance findings. Successful candidates must be proactive contributors who are comfortable working across role boundaries, learning the mission, identifying analytical gaps, and supporting the team without requiring continuous direction.

Security and Suitability: Active Secret clearance required.

Location: National Capital Region (Virginia, Maryland, DC).  The primary place of performance will be at the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Douglas A. Munro Headquarters Building, located at 2703 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave, SE, Washington D.C. 20593.

*** This position is contingent upon award of a contract to Harkcon***

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct interviews, workshops, surveys, case studies, and other qualitative research.
  • Engage directly with mission owners, operational personnel, program offices, and relevant subject-matter experts.
  • Identify missing stakeholders, capabilities, mission drivers, and operational dependencies that could affect the analysis.
  • Evaluate how the Coast Guard is organized, trained, staffed, and equipped to perform the mission.
  • Distinguish recurring evidence from individual opinion and clearly document analytical limitations.
  • Professionally raise concerns when exclusions, assumptions, or scope decisions may weaken the analysis.
  • Keep research focused on mission requirements, capability gaps, operational impacts, and future performance.
  • Draft clear, evidence-supported findings and integrate them with quantitative analysis.
  • Take ownership of assigned work without requiring continuous task-level direction.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, or a related professional field that included training in applying qualitative mission analysis methodologies to organizations, social groups, and individuals.
  • Clearly demonstrated formal training in qualitative mission analysis methodologies and the ability to apply that knowledge to acquisition projects.
  • At least five years of experience developing, conducting, and documenting qualitative mission analysis, such as case studies, interviews, program evaluation, surveys, or comparable methods.
  • Active Secret clearance at the time of contract award and ability to maintain the required access throughout performance.
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, with the ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; must satisfy all applicable background investigation and credentialing requirements.
  • Strong research design, facilitation, synthesis, technical writing, and evidence-based reasoning skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the U.S. Coast Guard, DHS, DoD, or another federal acquisition, operational analysis, or mission-analysis organization.
  • Experience developing analysis reports, capability analyses, operational assessments, program evaluations, or other products used by senior government decision-makers.
  • Demonstrated ability to triangulate interviews, workshops, policy and operational documents, case evidence, and quantitative findings.
  • Knowledge of Coast Guard Major Systems Acquisition Management, COMDTINST 5000.10H, and the role of analysis findings in downstream acquisition documentation.
  • Experience handling classified or sensitive information while producing clear, unclassified analytical products.

Additional Details

  • Work is performed at U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, and at the employer's facilities.
  • Travel may be required and must be approved in advance by the Government.
