Job Title: Engineering Specialist 4 (Ship Checker)

Salary Range: $26.00 � 29.00/hour
Job Description:
Reports to the San Diego based West Coast Ship Check Supervisor. The Specification Development and Advance Execution Support (SDAES) Division, is responsible for conducting ship checks onboard Navy Vessels of Work Notifications (WN) brokered to QED in support of Work Item development by the planners. A ship check consists of reviewing the brokered WN for accuracy and work scope, identifying components & equipment, associated system piping, and ship's structure to accurately describe existing conditions to properly develop Work Items/Specifications (WIs). After the ship check is completed on-board the ship, required reports and forms that contain ship check information including sketches & photographs, will be forwarded to the respective planner for work item development. As ship checkers gain knowledge and experience, the expectation is to follow a progression from ship checker to specification planner. The planner function is recognized as the prime function of QED/SDAES Division, and ultimately ship checkers will aspire to this role after developing the requisite experience. Candidate must be willing to perform other duties as assigned by the West Coast Ship Check Supervisor.
Job Requirements/Skill Sets:
  • Using applicable drawings and references, conduct ship checks onboard Navy vessels in direct support of the Planners to validate the work notification, determine the scope of repair, and provide the Planner with amplifying information to aid in work item development.
  • Identify interferences and any other special circumstances that will impact the planning process and work item development.
  • Document the ship checks with detailed information and photographs on the approved ship check forms in PDF format that can be used in the work item development and uploaded into NMD by the Planners.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work well with others.
  • Knowledge of Navy ship compartmentation and lay-out.
  • Ability to read, understand, and validate a work notification and to determine the scope of work contained within the work notification.
  • Comprehensive writing and communication skills capable of both verbal and written findings and recommendations.
  • Some knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe programs including Word.
  • Knowledge of Navy Structural, Mechanical, Piping, and Electrical systems.
  • 10% overseas travel expected. Must be able to obtain a Passport, CAC and/or DBIDs pass.
  • Must have a current and valid Driver's License.

Education Requirements: Individual shall possess a High School diploma or GED. Candidate should have at least two (2) years of education in a technical/vocational school, apprentice training, U.S. Navy or equivalent. Associate's degree or higher is preferred.
Security Clearance/Naval Facility Access: U.S. citizenship required. Must be eligible for and be able to maintain a U.S. Secret Clearance. Must be able to access military facilities, naval shipyards, and private shipyards. Must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. Passport.
